What can I say - this was my most promising dwarf priest, recently toasted by an unlucky teleport from full hp of ~550 to something significantly below that.
Is there anything I could have done to avoid this fate? I had teleported away from a Great Storm Wyrm to regenerate mana and I was considering a recall to town. I don't see how Teleport Level would have helped since it could have landed me in the same situation.
meh.

Unlike Teleport, I believe you get the first move after Teleport Level, so if you land someplace really nasty, you can TL again, or at least heal yourself.

More speed is helpful against Gravity Hounds. After the first breath you are slowed (-10) so you get even more breaths unless your speed is way above 10.
Nevertheless a group of high level hounds can kill most chars very easily (time, gravity, nether, plasma, chaos). Resistance helps only against nether and chaos. Chaos can be a pain anyway if another creature changes on breath into something more dangerous.

The same happened to me. Maybe TL is really the best option.
I have almost been killed by hounds a couple of times. I stopped doing teleports except at full health with HP >800 at dlvl 50+. I also depend upon telepathy and detection prayers to keep me out of fights from which I would NEED to teleport...
