RIP another paladin CL27 DL38, Hydra pit.
I managed to die when i had this:

the Elfstone of Ephel <+6, +5>
------------------------------
+6 strength.
+5 wisdom.
Provides resistance to acid, dark.
Sustains strength.
Prevents paralysis.

dead to a umber hulk; no mushrooms, no !Speed. wasted 24 potions trying to get out of the confusion stunlock.

Umber Hulks have few HP; in that situation if I were playing a martial class I would try to just bumble into the thing and hope I got it to flee, then cure confusion.

What derakon said. And if you weren't playing such a class, you could detect it before it got the jump on you. (I assume you carry ?PD until you are sufficiently strong to survive any failed cast of the spell.)

i tried that approach and got him down to 4 stars but still died. some small beetle joined in the fun and was hitting me for a few hp each round and that helped ned my run.

of course i was carrying phase, but it caught me by surprise. i was a measly ranger with 1.6 blows (or less) and just could not tank a hulk when confused.

you have to keep in mind that im impatient and dumb and fumble-fingered, so some deaths that were avoidable i won't avoid. I *just* lost a CL27 paladin to a 4-headed hydra .. frankly a mediocre character, so im not really shattered.

slow poison (although i've used this in other runs, not sure why not this time)
bless - used only vs Morgoth
scare monsters
chant - used vs Morgoth
sanctuary
sense invisible
earthquake
cure mortal wounds (CLW is just so much more efficient)
turn undead
prayer - used vs Morgoth
detect monsters
cure serious wounds
cure mortal wounds (dungeon book)
unbarring ways
enchant armor
dispel undead

not even cast for XP :/

You are making a mistake in not using bless in the early game when a +10 to_hit makes a huge difference against major targets. And sense invisible is very much determined by equipment--yeah it isn't always useful, but when it is, it makes a big difference. That said, its fail rate and/or cost.should be lower. And finally: the spell list is totally different in 4.2
