News Article

It's been almost ten years since the release of "The Children of Hurin," and now we'll be getting the tale of Beren and Luthien in similar format. I haven't read "The Children of Hurin" yet, except in the Silmarillion and the verse version, but I've only heard good things about it. Beren and Luthien is a much better story, I think, and I'm terribly excited!

Thoughts?

Cool, I hadn't heard about this :)

The description is a bit confusing. It sounds kind of like the book is going to present the original Tale of Tinuviel from the Book of Lost Tales, and then present the later material, which seems like an odd choice because the first version is in a very archaic, idiosyncratic style. Or maybe I'm just reading the descriptions wrong. I guess we'll see!

The Kindle edition is already available, while the printed books will probably hit the shelves next week, depending where you live.

Here is the publisher's description: "To show something of the process whereby this legend of Middle-earth evolved over the years, [Christopher Tolkien] has told the story in his father's own words by giving, first, its original form, and then passages in prose and verse from later texts that illustrate the narrative as it changed. Presented together for the first time, they reveal aspects of the story, both in event and in narrative immediacy, that were afterwards lost.-- $c From publisher's description."

I'll be really interested to read this. My approach so far has been to read all 12 volumes of 'History of Middle Earth'; this sounds as if it'll be a bit like that approach restricted to the Beren and Luthien bits.

If we ever have a LOTR trivia night, will you be on my team Nick? I will supply um... hmm. I will supply the alcohol and ring the buzzer.
