Comp 203

Competition 203 is up. We're playing Steamband! Thanks to clouded for the savefile.

Some advice: Most of the experience you get will be from using unidentified items and most of the items you will get will be from the floor, so that is what you should focus on. AC is quite important. You die when your wound points run out rather than your hit points, but this is really a limiter on dive length and nothing more, you still are in a whole lot of trouble when your HP runs out.

For builds, you really need to look at the helpfiles to understand the skill tree and what to raise to unlock the next skills, looking at dumps helps a lot too. If you want to use weapon combat, focus on raising the Neophyte/Standard/etc trees and then raise the "strike/blow" skills for increasing damage, the same goes for firearms and those skills. Martial arts only really needs the skills specific for it. For spellcasting, you should always raise Latin along with the occult tree or the prayer tree (or both, that is definitely viable). As a Rakshasa Naturalist this combo also has Dark Attunement from being a Rakshasa and all of the elemental skills a naturalist gets, I forget the specifics on these so you'll need to try them out for yourself.

It's saying score not saved for wizards, assume that's from the savefile and nothing I did? (Steamband looks like a blast, by the way.)

That's because I used debug mode to spawn the books and gun. I thought I'd tested to see if it marked the savefile and it didn't seem so, but maybe I was mistaken or my compile is different. Does it say anything about cheating when you make a character dump?

Not that I can see. All the "peek into"s say No.

Shouldn't matter then. When you upload your chardump the ladder is only going to look at turncount, experience, and maxdepth (for scoring, at least.)

Qyx March 22, 2017 17:55

Well, I tried posting a dump to test, and it's saying turn count 0. I love this variant though, with the returning books to the library. I fought P.T. Barnum!

But I notice the last Steamband comp (122) had the same issue, so I guess it's just a thing with Steamband.

Make sure you're 'I'nspecting the books first - that's a really good source of skill points.

Luckily this will only be a problem if we have more than one winner, which I think is pretty unlikely!

Been trying to figure out the numbers at the end on the ammo:

46 pistol bullets (2d11|0) (+0,+0) (+24/192)

Am I right in thinking it's something like 24 for a max normal hit, and 192 for a max crit?

(Tried looking in objects.txt, but couldn't make heads or tails of it.)

Qyx--congrats on your win!

Qyx April 15, 2017 08:26

Thanks, that's a great variant. Of course, I'm a little disappointed with my fumble fingers at the end!

debo April 17, 2017 15:10

Yes, congrats to Qyx and thanks to the few other folks who played along. This competition never seemed to pick up much steam.
