Other games?
So what do you guys play when not fooling around with Angband?
Me? I'm fond of Strange Adventures in Infinite Space, and particularly the sequel, Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space, both of which are almost Roguelikes anyhow. I'm fond of a game of Civ, also. In general, the more open-ended and replayable the game is, the better. I probably wasted a fair portion of my teenage years on Elite. Any suggestions of what's decent out there? |
I like the Space Empires series...
http://spaceempires5.com/ The fifth one is pretty buggy but when you buy it at Gamestop you get the fourth one included with it so you can grab both and take your pick which you like better... there are a ton of mods and custom ships out there for SE4, and there's a lively multiplayer server (for 4 and 5) at http://seiv.pbw.cc so you can get into online Star Trek vs. Star Wars grudge matches if you so desire ;) |
I'm stuck at Europa Universalis III at the moment. From the open source, I played a fair share of OpenTTD recently.
|
God of war II just arrived...
And S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Day of Defeat, HL2 when they get around to releasing the next episode. Oblivion (a little, but its too similar to Angband to enjoy). I tend to find I can't play anything RPG related, as it makes me want to code again... |
Pokemon :)

There are other games? ;)

I played that, but it kinda sucks. I heard they were making a patch with a cheat mode for infinite gold, I might give it another go at that point ;) |

Have you tried Oolite yet? http://oolite.aegidian.org/ |
Football Manager 06/07 (still not got th'Wednesday out of the Championship, just like RL) and occasionallly Civ 3 but that's about it for non-banding...
oh, and footy and cricket (v slow left-arm spin) in terms of RL games... |
lately i've been playing a couple games of risk at conquerclub.com
|
I'm a big fan of a Japanese shooting game series called the Touhou Project, and my personal ambition is to someday create a roguelike in that setting.
I have also been enjoying Puzzle Quest for the Nintendo DS recently. |
I've been playing Kingdom of Loathing for a month (it even has a "Nethack" dungeon), but without ascending. I got stuck in the Topiary Maze and going further is too tedious.
|
Kingdom of Loathing, Strange Adventures in Infinite Space, and Weird Worlds are all favorites of mine (the hedge maze is EASY once you figure out how to use the little puzzles). Now and then I play a few games of Spheres of Chaos, or Zuma Deluxe, or an old-time RPG called Realmz.
|
Lately, I've been playing mafia, a kind of socializing campfire game.
I've never really been into video games much but I've enjoyed the Baldur's Gate series in the past. Mission Thunderbolt is one of the greatest roguelike-dungeoncrawl games ever made that I've seen (as well as the sequel, Misson Firestorm), though unfortunately it was only really released for classic mac os so I haven't been able to play for a while. I think that Home of the Underdogs has a rather buggy demo for windows - you should check it out for a really good example of how to integrate nice graphics and sounds into a roguelike, without a cumbersome or hard to use interface. It was in fact the very first roguelike that I ever played. Also, (since it was mentioned here a couple times), I've been playing KoL on and off for a couple years. |
I play multiplayer StarCraft or Thief series from time to time. Lately I've got totally hooked on ADOM, which just prooves that roguelikes > other video games.
Other than that, I play volleyball semi-regularly. |
Quote:
I'm surprised there aren't more games similar to Angband being discussed in this thread though, heh. |
KoL update: I ascended a few days ago and find it rather boring to repeat it all again with only minor help (you can use items from previous ascensions and retain one skill, but mostly, actually, you can't due to lack of power or MP).

<edit> Oh, one game I did forget to mention... Legend of the Green Dragon, at http://lotgd.net/. Based on the old old Telnet game Legend of the Red Dragon, now web-based, and jolly good fun. |

I play Dota =)
|
I have been a big fan of the "Heroes of Might & Magic" series from the very beginning in 1994. So I am still playing the new "Heroes of Might & Magic V" with the addon "Hammers of Fate" and can't await the forthcoming next addon "Tribes of the East".
I am also playing Oblivion with addons as I played Morrowind for a very long time. Every now and then I start a game of "Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic" or "Civilization IV". |
By the way, two games that I think have a clear Angband influence, even if it's not immediately obvious: La Pucelle and Disgaea.
|
I played Nethack for a long time before learning about Angband.
Nethack, Angband, and Kingdom of Loathing, is a pretty much complete list of computers games I play nowadays (for the past few years). I tried Crawl. It seemed cool, but I figured I'd win Nethack again (which I've only won once), and win at Angband at least once before I got into another roguelike game. I'm also been burned out for Nethack for about the past year or so, both games have their advantages, but the main thing for me is that in Nethack you have to think a lot more and be super careful, and in Angband you don't have to think quite as much, so it's more relaxing to play. |
Nethack.
|
At the moment I'm playing DROD (Deadly Rooms of Death). It's a puzzle game with some story possibilities and lots of user-created puzzles.

After several years off, I've got seriously back into VGA Planets in the past year or two (v3, of course) - largely due to the advent of PHost4. Other games I'm about to play as soon as I stop playing VGAP or *band for one minute are Dominions 3 and Sword of the Stars.
|
Ah, you are the same Magnate from the Shrapnel forums? I thought the name sounded familiar... :)
|
ATM I'm playing for PS2: ICO and Naruto Uzumaki chronicles and for PC Shot Online, Maple Story, Gunbound and occasionally Oblivion.
I just had too much fun playing Katamari and Shadow of the Colossus for PS2 :D |

Computer: Diablo 1 & 2, Oblivion, Wasteland.
Table-top: Games like Barbarian Prince, some in dev table-top games. I prefer games single player randomized.. kind of like roguelikes but without a computer. |
Adom...
...adom, adom, adom!
Adom is easily my favourite roguelike, but because its so mindnumbingly gutting to lose a high level character, I only play it about 3-4 times a year, for a couple of weeks until I get something really good going and then lose it. *band rocks because its easier to pick up a char a week later and not screw up because you forgot how to play him/her. Also I get over dying a lot easier in angband. Yeah, I spent a lot of my teenage years playing the the Elite series too...:D |
Actually, the game that introduced me to the roguelike genre (before I even knew there was such a genre) was Castle of the Winds. Windows 3.11 shareware game back from 1989. Trivia page.
Did anybody else played this? |
Oh, yeah, CotW! I remember that one! :D
|
Quote:
|
Yep. It's a rougelike in the most important sense: random dungeons. Except for the top level of each dungeon and levels with plot events, and the surface I all the levels were random. I remember the generator had this wierd fluke of placing secret doors at the dead ends of corridors.
And yes, it was my first rougelike too. Probably the spiritual forerunner to Andband TK. |

Nice game. About me, my favourite game (and favourite roguelike as well) is Adom (www.adom.de). |
I am currently very hooked to "Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlods" which I got for my NDS and now for the PC too.
The Game is also available for XBLA and PSP. Check out the PC-Demo at http://www.infinite-interactive.com/puzzlequest/ and the Forums: http://www.infinite-interactive.com/InfiniteForums (here's a review at ign: http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/827/827071p1.html) The game is an unique genre mix, combining some RPG elements with the addictive charm of a "Bejeweled" style game which is the main part of the game. The concept of matching three or more gems in a row is used in many different ways: It represents the battle field where you fight foes, it is used to capture enemies, train mounts, forge items and research spells. There are red, blue, yellow, and green gems which are related to fire, water, air, and earth magic. You can use spells for dealing direct damage or alter the board, getting another turn and such. Direct damage on the board is done by matching three or more skulls. There are also purple gems which give you experience points, and gold coins to get ... gold coins. When capturing enemies you must solve a board that is set up for a puzzle. Forging items requires to destroy another sort of symbols, representing hammer and anvil. But before you have to find runes on the world map which are guarded by powerful creatures. Researching spells form captured enemies requires to destroy a certain number of scroll symbols and related mana gems. To do all this you have to build up structures in your fortress with the gold you have earned in battles and for finishing tasks. You can also buy items in shops or gain them for fulfilled quests (four different items can be worn to assist your hero in battle). Some of the people and creatures you meet will join you on your quest and support you in battle. You can even siege cities and villages on the map. This will earn you more money and grant you access to your fortress services from the besieged places. Doesn't sound very appealing? Just check out the demo! ;) The good versus evil story isn't very unique - just but a frame for the whole game. It suits very much for casual game which comes for an appropriate price of ~20$. The games has also earned a lot of good ratings all about 9 out of 10. |
I just had a "quick" go on the PC demo, which lasted about four hours. Great stuff, thanks for recommending it.
|
Maybe I should have included a more obvious warning. ;)
|
Yeah, maybe. I downloaded the full version this morning and that's been my day, basically.
|
:)
Wasn't a bad day then, I hope. ^^ They did a good job in making the game very rewarding. No penalties for loosing battles. Always something new to do around the corner. :D |
... and nobody tried Hellgate: London?
I bought it last friday and can't stop playing it! It's almost like playing Diablo 3 :D |
I got Hellgate and the Witcher at the same time and I'm having so much fun playing the Witcher (and entroband) that I haven't got past character level 7 in Hellgate.
|
>>... and nobody tried Hellgate: London?
Is this a game? It sounds more like a documentary... :) |
@hellgate: I tried the demo (I know it isn't representive), and I guess I would like to play it more. But my PC can only play it on the lower settings, plus If I had it, I would want to play online, and would chose the 10€/month version not this half of a deal free mode. Add to that the fact that the bug rate is still kind of high, so I don't see myself buying this game anytime soon.
I'll get Mario Galaxy instead when it comes out later this month, and maybe guitar hero III if they fix the no sterio bug in the european Wii version. |
I played full time Hellgate: London in these days and the only bug I found was that sometimes the player gets stuck in certain places (to avoid it just don't jump around like I do every time I play ;) )
The are minor differences between free and mothly fee version: In free version you can have only 3 characters (24 if you pay), you can't create guild but you can join them, you can't have certain items (which they should change only visually, not in power) and may be something else. The game game is fully playable off-line and I didn't found any kind of limitation yet. The demo is too short though to allow a real valutation of it. :D |
You say Diablo 3? Now you got me really interested.
Pav checks screenshots. What, no isometric hand drawn view? Bah. Pav dont want. |
@Keeper well non-paying you also miss out the new content they'll add on a regular basis. And I'm really sure that will include true items as well. It is enough stuff for me to want it, should I buy the game, what in turn makes it a reason to not buy it now. I want the full experience or non at all :) At least, iirc they've made the elite mode (only die once; hard core mode in D2; basic rule of Angband) available for free loaders.
Bugs, I did read about random crashes of both the game and the online servers and something about the artifacts getting generated without their atributes, but then again I've only read about it. Again if I had the computer and the freetime, I would likely buy it, as it is a nice game. Good thing I don't have the computer as the lack of freetime would likely not stop me alone :) |
I just beat Puzzle Quest! The final battle had me stumped for AGES, but I got lucky on my zillionth attempt. That was with a "jack-of-all-trades" knight, maybe I'll try again with a more specialised character.
Cool game, I recommend it. |
I like to play the game pockmon. It is so interesting.

no one plays WoW?

Guild Wars, from time to time. WoW... well, it degraded to a meeting place for L33T0rz. That doesn't mean that there are no smart people playing it.

He also found a way to get under the city, and apparently there is some sort of pit there that you can't climb out of, so he'd just knock people into it. I don't play because people like this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=LkCNJRfSZBU Are cussed out for having fun. |
Uplink is brilliant, by the way.
A little, cheap game (10$ on Steam) that might hook you up for a *long* time. Short: You're a hacker. Long: You're a freelancing Uplink agent. You perform missions for various companies, like destroying or stealing research data, tracing hackers who recently hackend them, hacking into banks to check financial standings, frame people for crimes they didn't commit... It has a few story missions, including an adrenalizing boss battle, which isn't really a boss "battle"... whatever, see it yourself! If you make a mistake, you might get disavowed and lose the game - no saves! Permalose (not death, in that case), like Angband. It has some flaws (you can get over 1.000.000$ in one stroke if you know how, which breaks the game - you can buy everything). Now go buy and play it. You won't regret it. (Well, unless you have a girlfriend) |
i also play emulated 8/16bit console games, breakout type games, pinball, and abandonware classic computer games.
BreakQuest is an AWESOME breakout style game, i could never reccomend it enough, it blew my mind away countless times, still haven't beat it on harder settings, one of the best games of all times, awesome physics and hellishly creative level design. my other favorite breakout style game is Fizzball, sorta breakout combined with katamari damaci, its so creative it hurts, and addictive, altho sorta easy. both are easily googleable and on wikipedia, check them out. |
I only skimmed over the posts in the thread, so apologies if someone already brought it up - does anyone play (or have played) Gemstone?
|
|
|
I spend my evenings on Lord of The Ring Online, on the Estel server (french-roleplay). Really a great MMORPG. (the Moria extension is coming !)
|
I'm eyeing the new Warhammer MMORPG. I'm a big fan of the oldschool Warhammer; I hope this one lives up to the reputation. It has the budget of EA behind it, so hopefully they won't cut corners.
|
Hmm, figured I'd post again here, since it's been a while... ;)
Lately I've played a lot of Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (from which I'm actually borrowing the skill system for my new roguelike, "Dungeons of Zennom" :P), and Mario Kart Wii! Hmm, anyone else here have a Wii? We should swap friend codes, heh! |

I still miss Marble Madness. I almost never played arcade games except some pinball, but I dropped a lot of quarters on MM, back in the day.

That's awesome. Last time I checked into this, there was some home grown project called colonization II that never went anywhere. Kudos to EA for bringing back a classic.
Thanks for the info. |
The only game I'm really playing other than Angband right now is Team Fortress 2. I have Warhammer Online on preorder, but after playing the beta, I'm not really looking forward to it all that much. I'm anxiously awaiting Diablo 3, but that could be years down the road.
I am trying to get into Nethack and ADOM, but the identification system is really giving me a hard time (I guess Angband's straightforward system has spoiled me). Also, in Nethack, getting my pet to follow me drives me nuts. He keeps wanting to wander off... One game that I've spent dozens of hours playing is Mordor: The Depths of Dejonol It reminds me very of much of a roguelike, though I don't know if it is considered one. Those dozens of hours I spoke of were spent playing the demo, actually. One of these days I'm going to get around to paying for the full game. The price seems a bit steep for such an oldie, though. |
By the way, for anybody who enjoyed the oldschool Warhammer games, the Warhammer Online open beta starts Sept 8 for 10 days before their release date of Sept 18. It'll be a free download and trial, so I recommend trying it out if that kind of game suits you.

Anyway, truth be told I have a hard time seeing either 40k or trad Warhammer given the full treatment. I love true wargames, and I used to play a couple rabidly via PBEM, but I have a hard time imagining that there is the audience to support a cutting edge online wargame. They are fatiguing, and it seems to me that not many people are looking for a game that is more tasking than their job, as a pastime. EDIT: and beyond that there are some difficulties with online turn-based games... at least with chess and go you can calculate while your opponent is thinking, and he only has to make _one_ move. Even there the game tends to devolve into a click-fest as the clocks run down. Waiting for your opponent to move in a wargame can be excruciating if both players have to be present. Even very simple games (like Wesnoth) suffer from this. |
4X games are awesome. You know, like Civilization or Space Empires.
But they are indeed very, very exhausting. I just can't imagine how people do that - over a thousand entites to micromanage... |
Yay, someone who's heard of Space Empires! :D
*summons a horde of floating Eee!* The floating Eee zaps you with a Lv. 12 Large-Mount Anti-Proton Beam! You take 65 points of damage! The floating Eee blasts you with Lv. 3 Phased Polaron Beam! Your shield arm feels crippled temporarily and you take 30 points of damage... The floating Eee scorches you with a Lv. 4 Wave Motion Gun! You get the feeling you are playing Animeband and take 750 points of damage! :D |
Uhm, lol.
I've actually played only one 'bigger' games of SEIV, at the pace of 1 turn a day, which was really slow in the beginning. Simulaneous turns, performed at midnight. Arounds 18-22 players, but I'm not sure... it was huge. I played as customized Eees... ^.^ |

Anyone play EXILE ? |
Actually Castle of the Winds was the first Roguelike I ever player, too, but I did not only not know what roguelikes are, I didn't really know what RPG's are. And I basically didn't understand anything, as back there I couldn't understand english. Needless to say, I didn't like it back then. And I still don't like it, but only because there are better roguelikes...
@aeneas Yeah, but I didn't claim that 4X games are wargames. I couldn't even categorize any game as wargame, as I never have played one... and I won't, if it that exhausting =P Super-Science-Cities are awesome! *g* All technologies while the other's are in the Stone Age! |
Quote:
Pics and a few videos can be found here: http://www.bloodbowldigital.com The game won't be out til next year though, but I'm hoping it will be worth the wait. |
Castle of the Winds rocks! First roguelike that I played, yeah, well before I knew what a roguelike is. But I totally loved it.
|
Though I suppose it's not entirely in the spirit of this thread, I have to say that I like Go a lot. When I was a kid I played Chess, but I eventually got to a point where opening preparation really started to matter (at the time I was rated close to, but not quite, 2200 USCF, though I think that would likely translate to strong class A these days- I played a bit at the Marshall a few years ago, and got soundly spanked by some of their resident Experts, though I tended to win the post-mortems ;)
Anyway, if you're looking for a game that is enormously mentally taxing, but is less dependent on memorization than Chess, Go is a great candidate. I have to admit that a little bit of Go goes a long way for me at this point. It simply requires too much thinking for me to want to get much better. I'm about a 1 dan (amateur, obviously) in Japan, and around 3k on KGS. I really enjoyed getting to that point though ;). |
My gaming time on the computer is split between Megamek and Angband. Megamek is a computerized version of turn-based table-top battletech (and a very good implementation of it I might add!). The version I play, actually uses a campaign server and is kind of a mini-MMORPG.
Of course, the days of spending an entire day setting up and playing a single match of Battletech has been reduced to 1-2 hours or less. |
Saw one mention of Dwarf Fortress earlier. Just found this one little while ago, and really dig it (pun intended). I still haven't played the roguelike Adventure mode, but the fortress mode is like ascii sim city if your citizens are all alcoholic retards (but in a good way).
Also Elonia- I've got this and tried it out a bit but didn't get past the learning curve. Very creative though. edit- apparently I'm the alcoholic retard- I'm new to the forums here from the ToME forum and I just noticed there's already a dwarf fortress thread in this forum. |
Did not play Angband since LOTRO has received the moria extension.

December brought me a new influx of console games. I am currently playing Harvest Moon: ToT, Super Swing Golf 2, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Kart, and William's Pinball Collection all for the Wii. Some of these were gifts for my kids...yeah...we'll stick with that one. :)
As for the PC...I have been really into Pro Pinball: Timeshock and Spelunky. I suggest you guys try Spelunky out. It is a combination platformer/rogue-like. You basically descend in to a cave and see how much treasure you can gather, along with permadeath. You have various equipment to help and increase your abilities. No real RPG elements to it, but a pretty good game. link to Spelunky http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=4017.0 |
If you're you're into pinball, and you seem to be, check out visual pinball, and then combine it with pinmame32.
http://www.randydavis.com/vp/intro.htm http://pinmame.retrogames.com/ Any one can emulate a video game... but here you'll find real pinball machine machines emulated and actual ROM emulation (for the newer machines). It's a lot of fun for the price (free). Funhouse is one of my favorites. And also check MAME32, for classic video game emulation, if you were unaware. http://mame32.classicgaming.gamespy.com/ I haven't messed with this stuff in a while. I hope it's still active/up to date. |
Metal Slug, hell yeah. Fun for two.
|
Thanks for the links buzzkill. I've checked these out a bit and will do more with them in the future.
I've done some mame before. One of my favorite is...I can't remember the name but it was a DnD based side scrolling beat-em-up. It's been a while. |
Game of the year 2008: World of Goo. A simple building/puzzle solving game but there's something so addictive about the way the goo balls squeal. A nice subtle sense of humour and smooth intuitive game play.

- a spattering of Diablo II - a brief affair with Hellgate (glad I didn't suscribe!) - about 90% of the NWN2 OC - quite a lot of Age of Mythology (Titans) - Crawl Stone Soup (heresy I know, but it did bring me back to Angband) Quote:
Best thing about the Wii is its emulation: being able to play the original Zero Wing is just awesome! CC P.S. To Big Al - I quite liked World of Goo, but it's basically a rewrite of Lemmings with better physics and way less addictiveness. I wasn't motivated to find more of it after finishing the demo levels. |
Elona. It's a quirky graphical CRPG with roguelike elements.
http://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/index_e.html Don't worry, it's in English (although it's better in the original Japanese ;-) |
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2, Diablo 2, Ghost Recon 1, and to my eternal shame...
I'm getting a real kick out of Kingdom Hearts 2, which I bought for my mohter on Mother's Day, but have played much more than she has. To be fair, she's hooked on GRAW. |
