24 hour Angband challenge
 
Hello all, just floating an idea.

Would there be any interest in a 24 hour Angband challenge?

One day to try to complete the game, or winner is whoever gets the furthest.

We all start at the same time and play until we have a winner or the clock runs out.

I'm aware we're all in different time zones, but we're Angband players so time is just something that happens somewhere else.

Not sure about rules, but I suppose we'd have to be fairly rigid about birth options and version of the game. Although I might suggest 4.2.3 to celebrate the new release.

Possibly we could stream, but it might be simpler to just post every time you hit each 10 clvls with a little bit of information and report.

Anyway, I'd like to hear your thoughts and guage if there's any interest

I like the concept, though I'm skeptical I could complete a game in 24 hours, maybe with some planning ahead of time, and remaining unemployed...

If I read into this correctly, no limitations on race/class, just birth options, correct? I like it, allows players to pick their most comfortable combo/style.

Seems a player doesn't get penalized for resting, if they can win the game first. I'm fine with this.

But what if nobody defeats M, does turn count come into play, or just XP? I vote for ignoring turn count altogether.

Seems like getting to choose race/class and ignoring turn count might make the competition more broadly appealing.

Maybe don't announce official birth options until the competition goes live - and make them slightly different than normal - that way there is something of an implicit timestamp.

In practice I am afraid that this community is too spread apart geographically for this event to work. Good luck finding a time when Europeans, Americans and Australians are all awake for a few hours...

Wut ? 24 hours covers every situation of a day, good or bad for playing, for everyone. Assuming you have time to play on that day at all, it doesnt matter where your playtime window falls into those 24 hours. Its brilliant - think about it again.

I would love to do this if I had the time. If it happens, I would probably put an hour or two into it, which to be honest will likely be enough to get me killed.

If you can't do the full 24 hours it doesn't matter too much, the main thing is getting us all to start on the same day. The hardcore can plough through to the end.

It's easily achievable, I've been playing today for about ten hours and I've taken a HE ranger to level 41 already.

Yeah I'm working this weekend, but the following weekend is good for me.

I think as basic guidelines:
4.2.3
No restriction on race/class
No selling
Know all runes and flavours on birth? Not a deal breaker, but it does speed up the early game and means fewer recalls for ID in shops.

What about randarts? It might be fun seeing what the game generates for different players. But standard artifacts would level the playing field a bit.

OK, it's actually properly up now, I think it's correct - let me know if not. The time is set to 1pm Saturday which is probably actually 11am UTC because of daylight savings in Prague but whatever, I think it's close enough.

Well...everything is pickable by the player except the only thing I actually care about. On top of that, I maintain that randarts are _not_ an advantage for a competition, for various reasons. I might be wrong about that...but clearly it is not the most unbalancing option.

So, why not leave it to the player to pick stand- or randarts ?

Randart lamps are generally stronger and there's more chance of finding things like +2 moves, or rings that add acid branding or +2 attacks.

On the flip side, in the early game it is less reliable finding a usable weapon - something like the thanc series.

Swings and roundabouts.

I have posted dumps from .live before...but somehow it doesnt work now:

I click on the .txt file on live, it opens a browser tab with the dump, I copy/paste it to notepad, but when i try to submit it doesnt recognize it as a char dump.

Try just saving it straight from the browser (ctrl-s, usually) - that works for me.

My HE mage is at clv19.

Dungeon level 13, LF: 9-8

It was an insect pit full of easy XP.

I found a randart pair of boots with +4 speed with poison, nexus resistance and a Star with +4 intelligence and +3 light, more poison resistance and activates magic mapping.

The next hour is going to be a breeze... my SP went from 34 to 67 the moment I picked up the Star of Adran.

Up to clvl 26 and feeling like a win within 24 hours is going to be achievable... I made the first 25 levels with a mage which is the hardest challenge. I just need a couple of wands of annihilation and I'm a unique assassin. The night is young, cranking up the tunes for the mid game

Some questions: How old is your Android? Have you used Firefox on your Android? If not, try it instead of Edge and Chrome. iirc, I had at least navigational experience with angband.live on Firefox. If you use Firefox, you should be using Desktop Mode. This is because Firefox's default mobile mode actually makes angband.live un-navigatable.

Started at around 4:45 AM (US pacific coast) and finished at about 11:10 PM.

Nice confluence of circumstances - I was able to arrange my schedule around this, take lots of breaks and of course the RNG was pretty good to me.

I give a rough estimate of actual playing time at around 16 hours

I'm dumb. This was my first competition and I think I was confused. I thought we would upload our dump at the end, but I now see that was not the case.

You can upload your dump at any point before the competition ends. Normally they run for weeks, so there's plenty of time. In this case, I recommend just posting it here - and the same goes for anyone else who missed the deadline.

Congratulations to malcontent for actually winning in the allotted time. I was able to get victory, but not in the 24 hour period of the comp. (Plus I forgot to turn off connected stairs, so a win wouldn't have counted anyway.) Nonetheless, here is the final dump after killing Morgoth.

Rather than clutter up a forum post with a long character dump, I just post the dump to the ladder, then post a link to it in the forum post.
