I Love Half-Troll Mages

I just started playing troll mages, having been a high-elf addict for years. I have a lvl44 one now, and it's a blast (3.0.9b). Tons of hit points (for a mage, that is) rule.

Thought I'd share.

i've never played a half-troll mage in V, but i've often played mage classes w/ low intelligence, high strength/con races in other variants (half-ogre, klackon) - it's a good way to go! i'd imagine it's even more useful in V, where mages actually rely pretty heavily on melee and ranged weapons.

Do you have a problem with not having 0% fail rate?

It seems to me that a half-troll mage would basically play like a ranger with faster spell gain in the early game; thus, being able to reliably cast spells wouldn't be your top priority anyway. Later on of course your INT problems can be fixed, or at least ameliorated, with the proper gear / statgain potions, and it's there that the half-troll's racial stats shine, since, once you achieve perfect casting, there's little point in better INT (so traditional caster races find themselves with a surfeit), but more CON is almost always useful (and traditional caster classes tend to be paupers here).

Sure. Early game, you only use magic missile and utility spells. I basically play like a rogue, except ranged weapons suck (so I always stay by stairs). The main goal is to get to stat gain and hang out to max everything, where being retarded is fixed. At that point, the bad parts of being a troll aren't so obvious, and you still have a the benefit of the race's high hit die. Through levels 1-25, I always have an average of 9-10 hp per level, obviously more that a high-elf would get. Clearly a different playing style is needed, but after CON is maxxed, hit points are pretty crazy for a mage.

I've never tried H/T, but I've played Dwarf Mage with reasonable success.
