Nomad April 2, 2017 21:58

Now that's really not bad for an early game find:

Code:

e) the Amulet of Antarsil <+1>
Dropped by Shagrat, the Orc Captain at 1050 feet (level 21)

    +1 constitution.
    Provides resistance to acid, poison.
    Grants telepathy.

PowerWyrm May 16, 2017 09:24

This funny shield is based on... the Wicker Shield of Elros.

Code:

the Wicker Shield of Eleros [2,+21] <+1, +4>
--------------------------------------------
A light circular frame of wood surrounding fine-grained wickerwork.

+1 strength.
+4 constitution.
Provides resistance to acid, lightning, dark, chaos.
Provides protection from confusion.
Cannot be harmed by acid.
Grants telepathy.  Sustains your life force.

PowerWyrm May 16, 2017 09:39

New randart rings can be nice...

Code:

the Band 'Aewenna' <+3, +4, +2, +8>
-----------------------------------
+3 intelligence.
+3 wisdom.
+4 dexterity.
+4 constitution.
+2 searching skill.
+8 speed.
Provides immunity to acid.
Provides resistance to lightning, fire, cold, light, dark, shards, chaos.
Provides protection from fear, blindness.
Cannot be harmed by lightning.
Sustains strength.
Speeds regeneration.

When activated, it tries to recharge a wand or staff, destroying the wand or
staff on failure.
Takes 90 to 110 turns to recharge.
Your chance of success is 63.1%

It's like a non aggravating one Ring... maybe even better.

PowerWyrm May 16, 2017 09:41

And this one...

Code:

the Ring 'Irthir' (+0,+15) <+10>
-------------------------------
+10 speed.
Provides resistance to poison.
Cannot be harmed by lightning.

RoS and RoD in one single ring...

Philip May 16, 2017 10:24

And poison resistance too. Literally the three most interesting normal rings in one.

Estie May 16, 2017 11:45

Wow hats a sweet one. And the values are perfect, too.

Estie May 17, 2017 20:11

My mage likes this:

a) the Ball-and-Chain of Falim (2d4) (+13,+8) <+3, +11>
Found lying on the floor in a vault at 4000 feet (level 80)

+3 constitution.
+11 speed.
Provides protection from stunning.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.

Combat info:
1.6 blows/round.
With +4 STR and +0 DEX you would get 2.0 blows
With +0 STR and +1 DEX you would get 2.0 blows
This weapon may benefit from one or more off-weapon brands or
slays.
Average damage/round: 49.9 vs. undead, and 13.7 vs. others.

Pete Mack May 17, 2017 20:55

Bah. Without adding RoCON, it's junk. Useless.

Original artifact, do not steal.

kandrc June 24, 2017 22:34

Here's a winner:

Code:

t) the Iron Helm of Amare [7,-11] {cursed}
Dropped by Boldor, King of the Yeeks at 2400 feet (level 48)

It makes you vulnerable to fire attacks, but resistant to cold.
It paralyses you every now and then.
It occasionally makes a loud noise.
    It makes you mentally slow.
    Provides protection from blindness.
    Cannot be harmed by acid.
Grants the ability to see invisible things.  Prevents paralysis.
    Aggravates creatures nearby.  Drains experience.

kaypy July 4, 2017 14:50

Quote:

u) the Mace of Breth (4d4) (+8,+14) [+3] <+5, +3, +2>
Dropped by a great swamp wyrm at 4500 feet (level 90)

+5 strength.

Average damage/round: 504.6 vs. dragons, 504.6 vs. demons, 382.1
vs. giants, 382.1 vs. orcs, and 259.5 vs. others.
No surprises here- we all know dragons have Breth weapons, right?

Sky July 9, 2017 19:51

WHAAAAAAAt

well, i just had one of the strongest weapons in the game (the trident of wrath) dropped by a common mage at DL26..

Accidentally started a standart game when my CL49 paladin died to morgoth and didnt realize until something dropped Forasgil .. by which time it was too late to restart.

Sky July 16, 2017 08:42

well, it's a shame i didn't find this:

the Chaos Dragon Scale Mail of Fuinque (-2) [40,+29] <+2, +5, +1, +16>
----------------------------------------------------------------------
+2 intelligence.
+5 dexterity.
+1 tunneling.
+16 speed.
Provides immunity to lightning.
Provides resistance to acid, fire, cold, poison, light, nether, chaos,
disenchantment.
Provides protection from fear, blindness.

Your chance of success is 91.2%

Random dragon armor of power 826.

PowerWyrm July 17, 2017 12:45

Seems that this armor is based on a ring of speed no? I can't see how it could have +16 otherwise...

And isn't the activation incorrect? Should be "breathe chaos or disenchantment" no?

Sky July 17, 2017 20:31

no idea, i just copy-pasted it from the spoilers file.

and yes, i wizarded it, it is in fact + sixteen speed.

PowerWyrm July 19, 2017 15:24

Code:

a) the Great Hammer of Elemet (8d1) (-6,-8) {cursed}
Dropped by Ufthak of Cirith Ungol at 650 feet (level 13).

It poisons you from time to time.
It paralyses you every now and then.
    It occasionally summons an undead.
It makes your weapon attack you.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
Grants the ability to see invisible things. Blessed by the gods. Prevents
    teleportation.

    Combat info:
    1.0 blow/round.
With +4 STR and +0 DEX you would attack a bit faster.
With +13 STR and +0 DEX you would get 1.1 blows/round.

s) the Ring of Power 'The One Ring' (+15,+15) <+5> {??}
Dropped by Golfimbul, the Hill Orc Chief at 4550 feet (level 91)

Must have plundered the mathom house.

This, btw, is why I avoid killing early uniques early.

Thraalbee September 2, 2017 19:35

Me want, but this sword deserves a better name!
Code:

the Short Sword 'Amoron' (6d7) (+9,+5) <+3, +2>

Min Level 53, Max Level 127, Generation chance 11, Power 329, 8.0 lbs
Random sword of power 329.

Thraalbee September 2, 2017 19:39

And I see I'm also gettin insanely fast Dragon armour generated although not found (playing the latest nightlies). This is just TOO good even for a randart. And Min Level is "only" 90.
Code:

the Gold Dragon Scale Mail of Nargilwil (-2) [28,+28] <+5, +15>
---------------------------------------------------------------
+5 constitution.
+15 speed.

Your chance of success is 92.6%

Min Level 90, Max Level 127, Generation chance 19, Power 623, 18.0 lbs
Random dragon armor of power 623.

It has power 623 which seems about right. That high a power number rarely gets created in randart sets.
You can keep maximum randart power at a smaller value of course if you like, but note that both con and speed benefits are capped, so under the right circumstances an armor with (+5,+5) slay bonus, for example, would be prefered over that wondermail.

PowerWyrm September 4, 2017 08:55

Well it's only +5 to-dam...

Sky September 4, 2017 10:03

all artifacts are at least (+15,+15) if you have the patience.

No way, no how do I have the patience to sit there scumming for enchant scrolls to make an artifact finally be worth using. Why do that when I can just keep playing the game and find artifacts that are naturally worth using without any enchantment, instead?

I never used Calris either.

Estie September 4, 2017 17:22

Yes, as a warrior, just read scrolls as you come by them if you happen to wield a lowly enchanted weapon; but other classes get the spell, and if high enough level, its a matter of macroing the cast to get to +15 in no time. Not something you want to do when in a competition for low turncount, but otherwise hardly an effort.

On that note, with enchant scrolls gone from the alchemist, I think it would be better if they just gave a plain +1, without any chance of failure, up to the +15 cap. To to-hit, to-dam, or both, depending on scroll type.

As for Calris, I used to collect scrolls when I found it and love it. In hindsight, I agree its not good enough a weapon to bother, but Calris is my all time favourite cursed artifact. It is the thing I measure all curse mechanics against.

kandrc September 5, 2017 01:55

I've had countless mage winners who wielded Calris immediately upon finding it. +5 to con in the weapon slot is nothing to sneeze at, and even at -20 to hit, it makes short work of d's and early D's.

It doesn't suit my play style these days, but the way I played in the 90s and early oughts, sure thing.

Estie October 6, 2017 20:40

j) the Steel Helm 'Fauglith' [9,+10] <+6>
Dropped by Uldor the Accursed at 1400 feet (level 28)

+6 wisdom.
Provides protection from blindness, confusion.
Cannot be harmed by acid.

This made the day for my priest; it upgraded a helm of infravision.

Thraalbee October 7, 2017 13:44

The War Hammer of Morgoth

Didn't know Grond had a litte brother but this one is a great upgrade for me albeit less impressive than Grond.

a) the War Hammer of Morgoth (5d3) (+13,+15) <+2, +5, +3>
Dropped by a mind flayer at 3100 feet (level 62)

+2 strength.
+5 intelligence.
+3 dexterity.
Slays dragons (powerfully), demons (powerfully).
Branded with fire, lightning.
Provides resistance to acid, lightning, fire, cold, dark.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
Grants telepathy. Grants the ability to see invisible things.
Blessed by the gods.

Combat info:
4.7 blows/round.
With +2 STR and +0 DEX you would get 5.0 blows
With +0 STR and +1 DEX you would get 5.0 blows
This weapon may benefit from one or more off-weapon brands or
slays.
Average damage/round: 296 vs. creatures not resistant to fire, 296
vs. creatures not resistant to lightning, 399.8 vs. dragons, 399.8
vs. demons, and 192.3 vs. others.

bdgamer October 20, 2017 18:31

If all I needed was some AC... wow.

Code:

s) the Leather Shield of Nuvalda [8,+47] <+1, +3>
Found lying on the floor at 2300 feet (level 46)

    +1 intelligence.
    +3 infravision.
    Cannot be harmed by acid.

bdgamer October 20, 2017 19:25

Guessing this has to be based off of one of the rings of power. Will have to look at spoilers after the game though...

Code:

d) the Ring 'Pereluin' <+6, +1, +5>
Found lying on the floor in a pit at 2650 feet (level 53)

    +6 strength.
    +1 wisdom.
    +5 constitution.
    +1 light.
    Provides immunity to lightning, fire.
Provides resistance to acid, cold, light, chaos.
    Provides protection from fear, blindness.
    Cannot be harmed by lightning.
    Sustains dexterity.
    Slows your metabolism.  Prevents paralysis.
    Radius 1 light.

When activated, it inflicts damage on evil creatures you can see,
heals 50 hit points, cures all temporary negative effects and
    grants you protection from evil.
Takes 176 to 216 turns to recharge at your current speed.
Your chance of success is 96.4%

bdgamer October 23, 2017 17:42

Ridiculousness at lvl 25

This ring is amazing at any level, but to have picked it up at level 25 off of the ground is just crazy.

Code:

c) the Ring of Avalachar <+3, +1>
Found lying on the floor in a vault at 1250 feet (level 25)

    +3 dexterity.
    +3 constitution.
    +3 stealth.
    +1 light.
    Provides immunity to cold.
Provides resistance to acid, lightning, fire, poison, dark, sound,
    nether, chaos, disenchantment.
    Cannot be harmed by lightning.
    Sustains intelligence, dexterity, constitution.
    Radius 1 light.

When activated, it teleports you five levels down.
Takes 155 to 209 turns to recharge.
Your chance of success is 94.6%

Derakon October 23, 2017 20:32

Use it to dive to the bottom of the dungeon. :)

AnonymousHero October 23, 2017 22:22

Oooh, nice observation -- activates for Deep Descent :)

bdgamer October 24, 2017 15:58

Working on it. Don't want to dive TOO fast before getting more HP and speed though. I would hate to waste such a gift from RNGsus.

Sky November 1, 2017 11:41

ha, dirty peasants! BEHOLD, my infinite might, as i posses not one, but TWO rings of power:

the Band of Gindir
------------------
Cannot be harmed by lightning.
Aggravates creatures nearby.

Min Level 13, Max Level 26, Generation chance 107, Power -8, 0.2 lbs
Random ring of power 8.

the Band of Ondir
-----------------
Cannot be harmed by lightning.
Aggravates creatures nearby.

Min Level 13, Max Level 26, Generation chance 115, Power -8, 0.2 lbs
Random ring of power 8.

BOW BEFORE ZOD!

Estie November 1, 2017 14:02

So, is that a challenge ? Outside the starting kit, only equip cursed items ?

Pete Mack November 1, 2017 14:47

I suspect it's more along the lines of a wail of frustration.
Cue: world's tiniest violin.
That said, I won't argue that randarts are perfect. I use standarts for a reason.

I dont know. Standarts are perfectly designed to fit. Randarts are, well, random.
I use randarts because I want my next game to be different.

As for the challenge, I agree it would be frustrating. I wasnt going to take it on.
That said, high elf mages dont need many things to get by. If mixed blessing items count, it would actually not be that hard - with a "good" randart set.

On second thought, randarts _are_ perfect. I use them for a reason.

Pete Mack November 1, 2017 16:16

Um. A 9d8 MoD +2 attacks with slay evil (among other slays) --with heal500 activation-- suggests that randarts are less than perfect. Yeah it's a great weapon. But a priest doing 1100 damage vs. evil really doesn't have much challenge.

Aha!

Nope, fighting Morgoth isnt a challenge with that weapon. Nor is it a challenge with Deathwreaker or a good ego weapon. What amounts to a challenge depends on the individual playing, but that aside, after defeating Morgoth a couple dozen times with standarts, it takes some restrictions to keep killing him challenging.

The challenge, if you want to call it that, lies in getting there. Everyone starts out level 1 with a dagger and a couple potions. Sometimes I find great items - then I proudly post my findings - but more often not, and then I dont make a post. But to keep starting out, I need the knowledge that there is something out there to be found. Standarts which I know (or at least knew - they have changed a bit) inside out and all of which I have found multiple times is not that.

That doesnt mean Morgoth cant be kept challenging, in principle. However, if "no artifacts" games with ego items only are no challenge, and everything random must be better than ego items to be equipped, it is impossible to make the endgame a challenge.

but then again, something you run into - like i did - a randart set without a single rNether, NO ESP, and barely average DPS.

it's very rare to find something like that in a randart set. i know, because i read every randart set i ever generated, and i have *yet* to find something like that.

but then again i found a ring of speed +20 and i have now found The One Ring a whopping 3 times.

Oh man, I wondered once if you could get dam on armor. My understanding it wasn't possible. How about damage, speed, telepathy, pBlind, pConf, DexSustain, *CON* and a whole bunch of resistances? Yes please! And let's give it heal (500) activation while we're at it.

Blue Dragon Scale Mail of Rodos (+1, +7) [12, +29] <+6> <+5> <+1>
resists: fire, acid, elec, cold, light, dark, chaos. pBlind, pConf, Telepathy, FrAct and sustains DEX, which means I can juggle around my gear for even more damage by putting a shield of speed in place of Preservation and donning "Weaponmastery in place of my current amulet of pConf. Ohhhh yeahhhhhhh.. Will have to post a char dump once I get all the gear ready for Sauron.

+6 CON
+5 Speed
+1 Light

the (+1, +7) makes up for all my gloves of thievery lately (+7, +1)

Been finding great stuff in chests in last several games; and this one was on DL96, so I was pretty excited to open it. Though I have all those resistances already covered and my current +5 speed armor has better AC, but this one is lightweight, so +1 effective speed right there and the Heal is good, too.

I'm doing a cool 1100 to Undead, Demons, Dragons and 625 to evil with a swap, but my Undead/Demon/Dragon is only 25 shy of that at 600 to evil, and its dam is at 8! I've boosted it form 5, but it'd be nice to get it to 12. And I haven't even finished optimizing my equipment for damage. All resists, except pStun and Shards. All this with a base speed of 33. Could theoretically swap out a ring of speed <+14> for a ring of dam (+12) but probably not worth it.

EDIT: I died fighting Morgoth. Both Sauron and Morgy rapidly summoning all hell and quickly I I was overrun. Against Sauron I ended up phasing around an oval room so had to teleport away. It didn't seem to make sense to destruct (not that I could get Sauron or Morgy in LOS for TO) as they both summoned so many so quickly it just felt like it'd happen again. I thought I was safe from LOS against morgoth and was trying to maximize my heals so I healed up to 620 with a !CCW but Vecna mana stormed me after Morgy bashed my head in a few rounds. Last two battles against both bosses have been quite a bit harder than other games in the past. Just when I was beginning to think I was getting the hang of fighting Morgoth. It's sort of frustrating as I had 1199 max HP, and yet he was crushing me down to 600 in like three rounds, while summoning the worst of Angband. The friendliest foe he summoned was a Vampire Lord. I did forget to deconstruct the start area, not that I ever do that. I usually just let M do the deconstructing. Oh well, it's boring if I win all the time. I ended up wearing two rings of damage in the end. Was doing 769 vs evil before multiple buffs bringing me up to 782. Pretty sure it's the most damage I've done to M but his summons sure were giving me hell. Before I hit the stairs I hastened myself with 3 staves of speed (15 charges) when they emptied I recharged them 9 times (only one blew up). So I hasted myself like 30+ times before I hit the stairs to fight him. I was at 32 speed the whole fight.

Sky December 4, 2017 02:21

did you somehow manage to fight sauron AND morgoth at the same time ??

waait WHAT ???? did i read that right, does haste from staves STACK ??

At the same time would be impossible of course.

There was discussion about letting haste duration stack, but if I am not mistaken it wasnt implemented. He simply used all hastes to get his staff empty.

PowerWyrm December 4, 2017 08:41

You just stack the duration, although it's pretty much pointless as you only get 5 extra turns each time you stack haste. But yes, since Morgoth drains charges, you'd better empty a staff of speed and drop it before the fight than letting him heal from the remaining charges.

Concerning Morgoth + Sauron, I bet it was the "mouth" of Sauron, not the actual guy.

Sky December 4, 2017 12:23

well thats useful to know. i generally do not carry staves of speed (but rather speed potions if i cannot cast speed) because of how much staves weight, because potions are more abundant, and because i rarely have an extra empty slot for them. but now that i know i can stack the speed effect, i'll drain them when i find them. 8 charges should be 20+ 1d20 + (5x7=35) turns, at base +20 that's a fair bit of exploration.

Derakon December 4, 2017 16:30

Speed potions aren't abundant for many players, and since they're immune to charges drain, players that can't cast Haste Self will tend to hoard them for the final fights, and rely on rechargeable staves of speed as much as possible otherwise.

Grotug December 5, 2017 21:11

Lately been finding lots of staves of speed in my games so I tend to take advantage of what the dungeon gives me. While it is a strain on precious equipment slots, it allows me to save speed potions, which in my general experience are rare enough that it's hard to stockpile a lot for the final fight.

I spoke of my fights with Sauron and Morgoth interchangeably because they were similar fights, but of course I fought them separately. I didn't fight MoS with Morgoth.

My experience has been a few times that Sauron and even M are more dangerous Uniques as compare to the top Uniques, but not in a whole nother category by themselves, but that's how it was in that last game. For comparison, I had started whacking away on a small s that I thought was an unusually tough skeleton ettin or something, when I realized it was Catoras I just kept going. He died without a fuss and I didn't even need to heal; which was the case with lots of tough uniques: I marginalized them, so going into the final two fights I thought I was gonna walk over the two final bosses, but instead got a whole lot of trouble from them right off the bat that was really quite a shock. That's a good thing, though. Nothing should ever be certain when fighting those two.

But, yeah, M really surprised me. At 1199HP I was really expecting to get in a lot of rounds before I'd need to heal or ?phase, but I'd hardly get in two or three, sometimes only one. It was nuts. Grond was doing work.

this ...

the Trident of Lienni (8d10) (+6,+12)
-------------------------------------
Slays animals.
Provides resistance to shards.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
Slows your metabolism.

Min Level 17, Max Level 109, Generation chance 5, Power 183, 7.0 lbs
Random polearm of power 183.

and NO off-weapon brands or slays in the entire set.

Derakon December 7, 2017 19:59

An 8d10 +12 weapon doesn't need slays or brands to be ruinously effective.

Pete Mack December 8, 2017 01:32

Yeah, that is a hell of a weapon--roughly 60 damage just from the weapon alone. It's worth noting that the standard artifact set has no off-weapon brands/attacks either, so it's roughly comparable to everything except Deathwreaker, at least in killing power.

Sky December 8, 2017 02:20

this randart set i'm playing now is inundating me with pConf, i have like, 8 items with it. I also found an endgame weapon on DL20, and i haven't used anything else since:
the Beaked Axe of Curion (4d6) (+13,+24) [+21] <+3>
---------------------------------------------------
+3 intelligence.
+3 dexterity.
Slays dragons (powerfully), demons (powerfully), undead, giants, trolls.
Branded with weak lightning.
Provides resistance to lightning, shards.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
Sustains wisdom, dexterity.
Speeds regeneration.

When activated, it heals 5000 hit points, restores experience and stats, heals
cut damage, and cures stunning, poison, blindness, and confusion.
Takes 172 to 252 turns to recharge.
Your chance of success is 88.9%

Min Level 46, Max Level 127, Generation chance 21, Power 276, 18.0 lbs
Random polearm of power 276.

note the !Life activation every 250 turns.

i'm just carrying around this other thing should i ever run into Ungoliant:

the Flail of Athis (10d6) (+18,+10) <+4>
----------------------------------------
+4 strength.
Slays demons (powerfully).
Provides resistance to cold.
Provides protection from fear.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
Grants the ability to see invisible things. Sustains your life force. Blessed
by the gods.

Min Level 40, Max Level 127, Generation chance 17, Power 228, 15.0 lbs
Random hafted of power 228.

1300 vs demons.

Thraalbee December 8, 2017 06:34

I believe the biggest advantage with randarts is min level tends to be favorable compared to std arts for strong items. Not a huge skew but adding 10 levels would be reasonable.

Sky December 8, 2017 12:39

yes and no;

no, because you are not likely to find any artifact before DL30. finding a Dethanc in the standart set means you are ok for weapons until midgame, and don't have to worry about not being able to do enough damage to mobs you should otherwise be easily destroying.

yes, because things like Rings Of Power become a daily occurrence.

randarts are almost always more powerful than standarts; the standart set is pretty much balanced, there's a couple of very strong weapons, but that's about it. in a randart set, you will find lots of garbage, but then you get stuff like this Ring Of Slaying here:

the Band of Naroth (+12,+8) [+10] <+2, +3>
------------------------------------------
+2 wisdom.
+3 dexterity.
+3 constitution.
+2 attack speed.
Provides immunity to cold.
Provides resistance to acid, fire, light, dark, shards, nexus, chaos.
Provides protection from blindness.
Cannot be harmed by lightning.
Slows your metabolism. Prevents paralysis.

When activated, it creates a large frost ball with damage 200.
Takes 106 to 130 turns to recharge.
Your chance of success is 86.8%

Min Level 91, Max Level 127, Generation chance 5, Power 631, 0.2 lbs
Random ring of power 631.

i'm currently doing 1898.4 vs demons

Not something you want to do when in a competition for low turncount, but otherwise hardly an effort.

On that note, with enchant scrolls gone from the alchemist, I think it would be better if they just gave a plain +1, without any chance of failure, up to the +15 cap. To to-hit, to-dam, or both, depending on scroll type.

As for Calris, I used to collect scrolls when I found it and love it. In hindsight, I agree its not good enough a weapon to bother, but Calris is my all time favourite cursed artifact. It is the thing I measure all curse mechanics against.

Indeed, with 305SP this will be a jiff on this scythe tailor made for Sauron and Tensers (which I have :D). Scythe of Nedhrieno (9d4) (+10, +6) 463 vs non rAcid, 202 vs others. Activates for TO; 270-330 turns at +20 speed, 98.1% success rate, sorta useless recharge time but good to save it for really scary things (not really any anymore with legendary stealth and 685HP, tho).

Ninja edit: just after I posted this (from killing Ji Indur Dawndeath summoned by greater rot Q) I carelessly forgot about the Q (and that I don't have SI) and then blasted (with Buckland and Tensers) a Demi Lich it summoned and it just dropped this:

The Unholy Trinity Bastard sword of Naras (8d4) (+8, +25) <+1> INT

*Slays* Dragons, Demons, Undead (powerfully) 723.5 and 203 to others. Provides Immunity to Fire. (I already have acid and cold immunities). Provides rChaos (as does the newly acquired Sauron swap). Greetings, dungeon. May your deaths be swift and unresisted. Now a swap of my current shield of preservation with the one at home means I'll have all resistances covered except for pStun and 3 immunities since my current shield provides rChaos..

Grotug December 9, 2017 18:23

This level with vault has some nice items: two rings with slays, though I’ll only post the better of the two (which was actually in a hydra pit), and a third ring with powerful stats and 500 heal but aggravates.

The Band ?Finweneda’ (+1, +8) <+2, +5, +3, +1> Found lying on the floor in a pit at 4000 feet (level 80)

It randomly makes you teleport {cursed}
+2 wisdom
+2 dexterity
+5 constitution
+3 stealth
+1 light
Provides immunity to acid, fire.
Provides resistance to lightning, cold, shards.
Provides protection from fear.
Cannot be harmed by lightning.
Feather Falling. Speeds regeneration. Grants the ability to see invisible things. Prevents paralysis.

When I go back home I’ll see if I can’t finagle my gear so that I can wear two rings of power and still make 20 speed.

Sky December 9, 2017 21:48

ugh .. teleportation??

anyway, me, i found a Kelek on DL23. i'm a warrior.

Grotug December 10, 2017 00:37

I've been swapping it with another ring of power, but it does manage to teleport me at the *most* inopportune times. Just after I got all buffed up to fight sauron, had my wand of annihilation at the ready he comes into view and I teleport to the other side of the level. S fell easily, though, quite a lot easier than I expected. Not so many summons and his health just diminished very quickly with a few flicks of the wand and the acid scythe (600something), like any other unique all game. M, on the other hand is gonna be tough, cause I have no means for hurting him. I'm doing 350 before buffs against M in melee and don't have a great launcher <x6> +16. I'm sure the dungeon will provide on DL100. :D

At least I have 40 !healing (9 still at home) 18 !*healing*, 6 !Life and 36 restore mana. Worst comes to worse it will be a long fight. But I'm very confident I will get the damage to 550+ while screwing around on the level killing what few uniques remain.

Say, I've found at least 10 of each advanced book (there was 4 Tensers on one level) but I have yet to see one Kelek's (have object detection spell, too). Does hobbit rogue not get kelek's?

Sky December 10, 2017 03:27

you only get Bedlam inside Kelek if you are a rogue, which is an utterly useless spell.

Pete Mack December 10, 2017 05:44

@Grotug--surely you found an adequate ego weapon by now, if no artifacts? Even a Lochaber axe of *Slay Evil* would work OK against M.

Grotug December 10, 2017 12:59

You know, I don't think I was paying much attention to {ego}s. There probably was one I didn't see, but I had two wands of annihilation coming into the fight and picked up a staff of power while fleeing P's mobs towards the end of the fight which contributed a fair bit to his demise along with some bolts. I'd empty the staff and wands on him, then melee him for a bit, then when an opportunity presented itself I'd recharge and empty again before he got in melee range again. I suppose melee accounted for about 60%. I used a lot of !healings (nearly 20?) but I think only one *healing* (I think I left the !Lifes at home and left all the !CCW, too). He only got off one mana storm on me near the end of the fight, but his melee and summons did enough damage to make up for it. I kept moving off of the ; whenever P would move to try to get at me. Not sure if that weakens the rune, but the next turn I'd be back on it, and the next turn it would be destroyed. The only rune that lasted more than like two rounds was the last one of 6, where P and a Horned Reaper couldn't get me and P summoned no more, and died with the rune still standing. Found a better xbow (I think x6 with extra shots) that I had to enchant using a few of my many !Restore Mana.

I was afraid to use banish or Mbanish; so many monsters all over the place; figured I'd hurt myself below 600 and then get mana stormed. Plus, I like to kill things inbetween fighting M in the hopes of getting a weapon (which is how I got the upgrade in xbow). I did the entire fight without any destructs or banishments. Just phased a lot and occasionally teleported away. I TO'd Grip and Smeagol but P never summoned them again.

Sky December 10, 2017 13:33

i take it you are doing forced descent? do scrolls of teleport level work? you could use them to generate a few additional level to milk for artifacts.

Grotug December 10, 2017 14:15

Yes, I'm playing forced descent. ?Teleport Level scrolls work; they always take you one floor down, unless you are on DL99 and Sauron is still alive. Once you hit level DL99, you cannot recall and you cannot be sunk through the floor by any of the many means the game has to sink you through the floor. This means rNexus is not necessary for fighting Sauron since he cannot send you down to Morgoth before he is defeated by you, and he cannot send you up a floor, because Forced Descent does not allow, by any means, for the player to ascend floors.

Sky December 10, 2017 14:43

tele-self, and wait for morgoth. do not *destroy*.
use half your arrows, tele-self, wait for morgoth, use the other half, tele self, gather up used arrows, TO the summons if necessary, repeat.

most summons will get lost in the dungeon between your teleport-selfs as they try to path to you, but get stuck in the middle as you keep jumping from one side to the other.

that's more or less the only tactic you got without rune, strong melee, ranger arrows, or chaos strike.

i love playing rogues, but i think they have the weakest endgame ..

Grotug December 10, 2017 15:56

The whole game I felt the combo was pretty overpowered; of course I found great gear with 3 immunities and had all my stats except wiz at ***. I was expecting to have a much worse time in melee, but my little Hobbit Rogue was great in melee. And at the end I had over 1000hp. Half the time I didn't even need TO because I just tip-toe around everyone and take what I want thanks to Legendary stealth. Since I found so much INT gear, I could be hasted all the time if I had regen. I think this game I may not bother saving !speed potions. I never used them the rest of the game once I reached I think 200SP.

Seems to me Hobbit Rogue does everything pretty darn well. I had a pretty big magic device bonus on the staff and wands; doing almost 380 per flick of the annihilation, not to mention the excellent skills with da bow (never found great bolts to go with the xbow, so was doing fairly nominal damage there).

But, yeah, the fight with Morgoth was a bit rough given I didn't have a good weapon for him. Even with Shield up he was pretty effective against me, though my base AC was only 145.

I feel like Tele-self is kinda buggy. It literally takes me to two places in the entire map most maps. I've self tele'd like 6 times in a row, only to bounce back and forth between two points over and over, which means if I've TO'd anything that level I will get placed next to *all* the dudes I TO'd. A roomful of nasties, like they were all sent to the corner or something, and then I sent myself there, too.

I have so many great artifacts that I'm bewildered at what combination to use. I'm glad I slept on it instead of trying to push through and finish last night because I just figured out a rather broken combination of power that I overlooked. Make sure you check out all the crazy good artifacts in my home, too, not just on my person.

With one weapon I do 670 to evil and another it's 1350 to Undead and Dragons and I'm maxed on all stats except 170 on WIS, and character solved except for Chaos and Shards. I don't sustain DEX or CON but I can restore them for a fat mana fee and I'll be killing things so quickly I won't be suffering much stat drain anyway. It's so rare I can put together this sort of power and pStun (actually, I don't think it's every happened). One thing that's really nice about Randarts is I more often than not end up using an amulet other than "Trickery, which is refreshing.

This game I've found big off-weapon damage, off-weapon shots, off-weapon extra blows, off-weapon elemental brands and "off-slot" speed (currently wielding something of a Cubragol xbow). Basically, living the dream. :)

I think it would be fun to use this randart set in a competition to see who can beat Morgoth the fastest. I'm thinking sub 40k runs should be pretty doable. It's a pretty sweet set since it has something good for all classes and play styles. I may play it again and dive like crazy since I know so many good artifacts lie in wait.

EDIT: Oh man, Ungoliant just dropped X6 xbow (+18) this will be crazy with the +2 extra shots ring at home. Maybe I go ranged against Sauron, or could bring the ring as a swap for easy max ranged/melee switching. Of course swapping out the xbow means losing 9 speed (which hardly matters while firing, but does matter while meleeing).

What in the good graces is going on? I'm now doing 796 to evil thanks to picking up armor with extra blows and +5 DEX. 1120 to Giants, 1575 to dragons and Undead. Hello and good day. Too bad I just killed Ancalagon, Kronos and Polyphemus.

I just found pretty good slippers with

*spoiler alert*

*spoiler alert*

*spoiler alert*

The One Ring activation. I don't even know what the activation is (please don't tell or even hint to its nefarious or benign or beneficial effects) as I never dared activate it the one time I did find the One Ring. I'll probably try it out at some point, but I'm a little nervous about it.

Ethereal Slippers of Rinari [0, +7] <+5>, <+10> Stealth, Speed. Protection from Fear, Slows metabolism.
When activated, it does bizarre things.
Takes 557 to 816 turns to recharge at +24 speed. Your chance of success is 96.1%.

EDIT:
Just found a noteworthy ring of power Sorwaewe (+2, +5) [+4] <+4, +6, +2>

+4 Strength
+6 Intelligence
+6 Constitution
+4 Searching Skill
+2 Speed

Provides immunity to Fire.
Resists Acid, Cold, Light, Dark, Sound
Provides protection from fear.
Sustains Strength and Constitution.
Grants SI.

Not bad find for a Hobbit Ranger.

Pete Mack February 16, 2018 04:01

Bizarre activation is pretty awful. Even when it activates for good things, there's no guarantee It's actually useful. Then you have to wait 500+ turns for it to activate again. It is just a losing bet all around.

Grotug February 16, 2018 12:20

Well, this weapon may be broken:

Lochaber Axe of Belebor (9d8) (+12, +17)

+1 Intelligence
+1 Attack speed

Slays orcs
Branded with fire.

SDig., SI, rLightning

1086 vs orcs and those not resistant to fire. 532 to everyone else. And that's without wearing a ring of damage.

Thraalbee February 16, 2018 14:59

Not broken imo. A +2 attacks or slay evil MoD is probably hitting even harder and only marginally less helpful

Sky February 16, 2018 20:51

go look at the stuff on the first page http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=8481

Bummer if you're an orc though

A.

PowerWyrm February 19, 2018 08:45

Every randart that has the dice of Grond without being Grond is broken. Imagine you could have slay evil on that instead of slay orc...

Grotug February 21, 2018 23:23

I'm currently having an aMaging run. First time I've played a mage beyond CL20. The run has been ridiculous in giving me key finds. It took a little while to really get going, but then I was being flooded by +5 CON and +5 INT randarts.

When I found a helm of pBlind and Telepathy I was pretty damn stoked as that is a rare power combo to be found in a helmet. When I found another artifact with the same abilities plus +5 INT I nearly fell out of my chair. Later I found <+13>, <+5> sandals with pConf that pretty much sealed the deal. That's +5 to INT on the fastest footwear I've ever found in this game with a key ability to boot!

I've been ready to take on the bosses for awhile now but I'm trying to find some staves of healing and another staff of the magi or two. Oddly, my sole magi staff for the whole game won't backfire. I've recharged it at least 30 times. My wands of drain life backfire regularly, and the first time I recharged a staff of Holiness it backfired. Yet my staff of the magi has seen me through just about every deep unique in the game. There are very few uniques left now.

I have all immunities, all resistances except light and stunning, ALL sustains and 211AC (no robe of permanence needed), and my INT and CON are at *** and STR at 190 and DEX at 200. I only have 848hp but very few things can do 500 or more damage to me. Alas, I don't have feather falling. :p

I melee GWMCs without runes of protection. I just shield up and melee them for awhile until they die. :D

I may have to replay this randart set as a ranger, or some other combos. Just so overpowered. There was a helm of extra shots I found early. I'll post a chardump if anyone is interested to see this overwpoered @.

Oh, and my base speed is +27.
Also, lava is handy permanent ; against Undead seeing as I am immune. :D

Sky February 23, 2018 16:49

i think i died 10 times in a row now. once with a CL40 ranger. i'm just too stupid for this game.

Philip February 23, 2018 18:08

I think angband should let you win on roughly 1/100 characters, 1/25 for experienced players. Dying 10 times in a row would feel to me like perfectly normal game balance - I don't know how many O characters I've played, and I've only won once. The premise of angband for me has always been that permadeath is there to make your deaths interesting and meaningful, so the deaths aren't that bad.

Sky February 23, 2018 20:29

and now to a veteran in town.

Grotug February 23, 2018 21:13

I probably win about 1 in 20 games, but I don't know I might win more often. I definitely have lots of games where I die before CL10. Once I reach 700hp or so it's rare I lose. For me the end game is too easy/less interesting than the rest of the game. In my recent mage win I just made a diagonal corridor and put a bunch of ; in it and then hockey sticked Sauron with book 9 before he ever saw me. The M fight was more interesting since you can't do that, but it was still pretty easy. I think the hardest part of the game for me generally is the DL40s when the danger level goes up significantly from the DL30s. Ancient dragons, for example, are much more scary than mature dragons, but I hardly notice the difference between mature dragons and young dragons.

Dive faster and see what is the lowest experience level or hit point max that you can take on the Bosses. That should increase the difficulty factor. ;)

Sky February 24, 2018 13:03

..i dont think the difficulty is the problem. it's that the game is structured like this
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
nothing happens
you die.

which is also why, when you *do* get a interesting fight .. or rather, when *I* get an interesting fight, i have a hard time pulling out. my "i'm spent, i need to bail out" mark is a lot higher than anyone else.

that dangerous unique? FINALLY! something to give me a real bump of XP and possibly a decent drop. CHAAAARGGE!!

I have done that to some degree. My fastest game is 32K turns.

Turn on forced-descent. IIRC modern versions of Vanilla have a level-skip setting? Set that to 50% so there's only 50 levels in the game. Turn off selling. If you ever find yourself holding down a direction button, immediately head for the stairs instead. You have all the opportunity in the world to make the game move faster, but it's on you to take advantage of them.

Grotug February 24, 2018 19:07

I sometimes play with skip 3 levels instead of one, but I've never gotten very far. I almost always play forced descent except when I'm playing something I'm not terribly comfortable with like Hobbit Ranger or Gnome Mage.

So my last Mage game had all randarts tailored to Mage. This game all the randarts are tailored to warrior. How about that!

Let's see... two rings each with <+1> attacks. A bunch of weapons with extra attacks. Gauntlets of damage (+7, +15) and I just found the Halberd of Menniend: 4d5 (+8, +33) <+1> attack speed. Slays evil, branded with lightning and acid which translates to... (drum roll please)...

784 to Sauron and the like, 784 to those not resistant to electricity. 682 vs Evil and my STR is only at 18/141, and dex is at 18/162. Pretty insane damage output given that I'm not wearing any rings of damage.

Why people play standarts when you have the chance of doing this sort of damage. I will never go back! :D Now to find some telepathy....

PowerWyrm March 1, 2018 13:49

Code:

a) the Morning Star of Brantel (8d6) (+6,+18) <+4, +2, +1>
Dropped by Baphomet the Minotaur Lord at 2950 feet (level 59).

    +4 intelligence.
    +2 speed.
    +1 attack speed.
    Slays giants.
    Provides protection from fear.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
Grants the ability to see invisible things.

When aimed, it shoots a bolt of mana that inflicts 12d8 points of damage.
Takes 125 to 138 turns to recharge at your current speed.
Your chance of success is 77.2%

    Combat info:
    6.8 blows/round.
With +0 STR and +2 DEX you would get 7.0 blows/round.
Average damage/round: 1103.5 vs. giants, and 675.6 vs. others.

And it doesn't even have any brands or slays except slay giant. Imagine slay evil on that...

PowerWyrm March 2, 2018 12:41

Code:

q) the Quarterstaff 'Ataras' (7d11) (+5,+14) <+5, +1>
Dropped by Khamûl, the Black Easterling at 3100 feet (level 62).

    +5 strength.
    +1 constitution.
    Slays trolls, undead.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
Grants the ability to sense trolls.

When activated, it inflicts 60 points of damage on all undead creatures
    within line of sight.
Takes 167 to 186 turns to recharge at your current speed.
Your chance of success is 77.2%

    Combat info:
This weapon should be wielded with both hands.
    5.8 blows/round.
With +0 STR and +2 DEX you would get 6.0 blows/round.
Average damage/round: 1176.5 vs. trolls, 1176.5 vs. undead, and 636.2 vs.
    others.

Doesn't feel safe to be undead...

qaz March 4, 2018 19:01

not a randart but wow!

Power Dragon Scale Mail at 750 Level 15 playing normal settings in 4.05 or was it 4.1. Anyway it was the first time ever in 100s of times playing. I have two out of 3 of the Artifact Scale mails but don't remember ever finding the Power Dragon version. Maybe I should post this some where else.

gglibertine April 8, 2018 16:36

I'm playing a weak Hobbit Rogue and had been stuck shuttling back and forth between DL 13 and 14 because I hadn't found an even remotely adequate hand weapon or any decent armour. Then I got a level feeling of 7... found black dragon scale mail... and then...

Yep, that'll do it.

ETA: just hit DL16. LF: 4-9. Be still my beating heart.

It's Wrath of God and a mace of distruption you can't lift.

Moving Pictures April 23, 2018 00:57

The short sword "Imlost."
Nothing amazing on it, but ... well, I left it behind, so its name is quite accurate.

Estie April 23, 2018 14:31

Granite in 18 turns!

gglibertine September 18, 2018 12:41

Well, this should help a bit.

Sky September 18, 2018 20:45

Well you were lucky to have it drop at DL10, but the artifact isnt really memorable.

Derakon September 18, 2018 20:55

It's good enough to last them through the midgame at least; I'd call that pretty memorable. Would you consider it memorable to find Forasgil at 500'?
