I think it could legitimately happen that way - fire vortices emit light, IIRC, which means that although the ring was outside your lit range, the vortex illuminated it for you shortly before coming...

P.S. Although built for i386 it will work fine on amd64 architecture (you will need to tell dpkg this), but sadly not on Macs. Mac users will have to wait for the official builds - sorry.
