Blue mages can indeed learn throw boulder, which I found to be their best single target spell in terms of damage/mana, damage/turn, in addition to stunning and being resisted by next to no monsters....

I think there are decent arguments for both sides. Maybe a more meaningful limiting factor on healing potions could be to temporarily reduce the effectiveness of consuming too many potions at once?...

Thanks for the quick reply and helpful answers @Sideways! I'd almost convinced myself that some of the higher leveled monsters were immune to slowing despite it not saying so in their description....
