Never done it with rings, but if you read a scroll or zap a wand and the effect created doesn't cause you to learn what type it is, the game labels it {tried}.

I would prefer swap weapons to being able to re-rune, but at least re-runing allows some flexibility. Regarding slays, I just can't see carrying around a slay unless I know I'm going to be using it...
