Actually, that is what the roguelike keyset is for. (It is also better for playing the game on a full-size keyboard because you don't have to move your hands)

The roguelike keyset is the best! You actually use hjkl and yubn to move around. Its not entirely intuitive at first (if you're not a regular vim user) but after you get used to it it's way better...

Ctrl+direction will tunnel through any adjacent walls. You might know this but I thought I would point it out. Not quite as simple(but much safer) as just moving in that direction but it works.
