Note that time hounds breath time which temporarily reduces stats even if you have sustain. Not sure whether there is another source of time breath. Doesn't sound like your situation though.

Playing a ranger now and running into 3 different wolf packs (maybe 20 total) was the only time of serious danger in the early game (until clvl 25 or so). That's definitely good for the game for me...

Well, my character did a few dungeons levels deeper to a snake. It blinded my each turn, I chugged cure light wounds and didn't even notice that it was taking huge bites from my hitpoints as well....
