Starting as archer without smithing

Tried to play a smith, and the first bow I found...

Tried to play a smith, and the first bow I found was a 1d7 at 550' with clock at 300'! Bad luck. Next game I find a shortbow of Gondolin and poisened arrows at 150'... :rolleyes:

Hello there,

I have not yet explored the possibilty of starting with a Song as first ability, is it viable or just like a challenge mode?

I mean:

Song of Elbereth is useless against...

Hello there,

I could not find anything on the subject even with "search" (maybe too low Perception, lol)... I also know I use an "old" version of Sil.

Can it be that the "known monsters" and...
