GCC was helpful in saying to put the switch '-std=c99' in.

Maybe VS is in c89 mode? You may need to find the 'my code is c99' checkbutton/switch....

I only used the makefile to see what flags to use to compile.
It was shocking to see 300-odd warnings with -Wall etc on though...

Eh? It's not like you you have to use it. I would never suggest such a thing. Its an option(using a key) to pick the first valid item. It would not affect identify in any way from it's present...
