Change Mode
First off, let me say "Hi". I just joined.
Anyway I've been playing Angband for about five years but I only recently noticed the "change mode" (h) key when looking at the players attributes. But I'm not sure what it means. It looks like it shows the level of resistances for each item being worn. But beyond that I don't how to interpret the information. An explanation would be appreciated.Anyway, as I said I've been playing Angband (Vanilla) for about five years. I started with version 3.03 and I'm currently playing 3.06. I've won three times. But for each win, I would say I make about fifty attempts. I'm good with the beginning and middle game but a lot of the time I run into the (proverbial) wall in the end game and just get fed up and then begin another character. My current character is a Gnome Mage, who's doing pretty well. But this time I would like to actually have a *winner* and have no intention of quitting until I do so. Anyway as I said, I just discovered the "change mode" key and I'd like to know how to read what it says. Thank you. |

+ indicates resistance/has this property.
* indicates immunity. The letters across the top indicate which slot we're talking about (a=weapon, b=launcher, etc.)

Thank you. That makes sense. But I'm still not sure what the green numbers to the left of the player attributes mean. I think it's letting me know how many pieces of equipment affect certain attributes (ie CON). Plus I see an 's' across the board for the shield and since I'm wearing Anarion, I assume the 's' is for sustain. So, if I'm correct it's giving me good information. Anyway, in the past whenever I wanted to know what my character could do, I would read a scroll of self knowledge. But obviously those are somewhat rare and I'm trying to max out my resistances while keeping my other attributes as high as possible. It's quite difficult to say the least.

Yes - 's' means sustain, the numbers mean how much that equipment increases those stat(s). If you 'I'nspect your individual equipment items, they should tell you which stats they increase also.

Yep. Once I was able to interpret what the other mode was telling me, I could easily see where my strong-points were and what resistances still needed work. Since I already had a lot of equipment at home, I just had to tweak what I was carrying. And the rest is history.

But it's not easy. You still have to get the equipment, which is obviously where most of the work comes from. What I found though with the "change mode" key is how to best utilize the equipment that I already had. For me at least, it was very helpful. Usually when I get late into the game, I get frustrated and give up. This let me actually win. But the game was by no means easy.
