Level feeling

Hi

Are level feelings solely dependent on the objects or does it scale for your character's level / dungeon level ?

I had a level feeling of 7 for objects and all I found was a potion of intelligence.

Seeing these potions are quite expensive in the shop I suppose this would raise a level 7 feeling ?

Treasure feeling depends on the object's natural depth and dungeon level it is found. Your character level doesn't play any role there.

If there is an artifact on the level, treasure feeling is always at least 5, even if it is a measly weak early level artifact, found deep in the dungeon.

Stat potions have natural depth of 30, afaik. So yeah, getting one generated early, produces pretty high feeling. I've had many disappointments finding a brainy potion for a warrior.

Oh, and items in chests or inside rubble do not count to treasure feeling. Neither do deeper type of coins (adamantite, for example).

This is an important point.

The boots would bump the level feeling, but since the troll picked them up, you'd never "find them" without killing the troll.

So, just because you can't find something that seems appropriate for the level feeling, doesn't mean it wasn't there.

In contrast if the troll just randomly dropped the boots as a treasure, you'd have had not feeling whatsoever for that level.

If a monster picks up a Potion of Experience or Amulet of Trickery or some other such deep item, and then gets *destructed*, banished or trampled, you will never know what caused that great level feeling.

Items can also be crushed on the floor by several different monsters or get destroyed by appropriate ball/breath attack, without you ever knowing it was the go-to item.

"There are superb treasures on the level". Yeah, an early Ring of Speed that gets picked up by a Cutpurse, who then gets trampled by a Blubbering Icky Thing.

I use level feelings as a very rough guide. They are helpful but I think it's really important not to obsess over them.

So many good items can be lost in the creative ways described above - but usually it's stat potions getting shattered.

It's just best to move on. If you didn't discover an artifact then the chances are it will show up later in the game (depending on your birth options). And stat potions are so plentiful at depth that if you miss one early one it really doesn't matter so much.

For me the most annoying thing about level feelings are dungeon spell books for a class you aren't even playing. I really wish it could be scripted that only relevant books trigger feelings (if you're not selling to town).

Personally, I don't use level feelings at all. I stopped using them when I was desperate for CCW potions, and found like half a dozen of them on a floor with a level 1 (or similarly low) feeling. Then I realized that the level feeling really has no idea of, and nothing to do with, what I need. They were just a distraction.

I prefer to fire off detection and treasure location and explore the floor for a while, moving on if things seem sparse, or the enemies seem nasty.

Personally, I would encourage people to try at least one game without level feelings. I don't know why, but i found it *so* liberating.

Thanks guys, I have been obsessing with level feeling hoping to find deep artifacts at lower levels, probably just best to let the game take its path. I spend a lot of time going up and down until I get a good level feeling.

By default, do artifacts still only appear once (default birth options) as per older versions of the game ?

I think by default they generate again and again until discovered and discarded, only then they disappear forever.
