Humans are not that bad after you get something to compensate lack of infra/see_inv. They advance fast especially as warriors and have decent hit-die. Elves and half-elves are the real challenge races in angband, elves especially. Dwarf is probably the easiest as warrior though (very good infravision, high CON and STR and hit-die). Just don't play stealthy way.

In a nutshell. Also lack of STR and fighting skill are a factors when you play warrior. Even hobbit is better than elf, thanks to bonus to CON.
