Are these new room types the reason I hit a level where the entire level is tiny (maybe 60x20) and I had full knowledge of it when I arrived? This is pretty different-- I'm surprised I didn't get a level feeling.

Sounds like a labyrinth level -- did the entire level consist of a maze of one-tile-wide corridors? Early on you get wizard light when you enter those levels, to ease navigation; later in the game they start out undetected like any other level.

yup, that's it, and after fighting off some hounds I got killed by my favorite monster, Mr. Umber Hulk. This is pretty cool.
Any chance the default level feeling for labyrinth levels could be "You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike?"
