Question Interface issues on Linux

I'm trying to play Angband on Ubuntu for the first time but there are two things I cannot figure out:
  1. How can I maximize the GTK window? Is there a full screen option?
  2. How can I open a saved game using an SDL or X11 window? ctrl-O does not seem to work.

I don't think there's a fullscreen option for the GTK port. Note that the GTK port has been removed in 3.4 as we have no GTK devs. It will doubtless return if one joins the team.

To open a saved game using -mx11 or -mgtk, use the -u switch. Angband expects files of the form <uid>.Charname, and you supply just the second part, i.e.

./angband -mx11 -uCharname

The default path for savegames is ~/.angband/Angband/save/

I'm playing version 3.3.2

You mean, the only way of loading a saved game in the X11 and SDL interfaces is to use a terminal? Gross! Could someone explain to me in greater detail how to do this? I hardly ever use a terminal.

And is there a shortcut key to maximize a GTK window if there is no full screen option?

I don't know whether to be appalled or delighted that there are now Linux users who think like this

Delighted. It's good news that nowadays you have easily accessible alternatives to Windows and Mac OS. Feel free to stay with your Slackware and Arch Linux, if you want to impress people

So... "How to load a saved Angband game into an X11 or SDL window." Anybody?

Create an icon on your desktop for launching angband. Edit the properties so that the "command to launch" is

angband -msdl -uCharname

instead of

angband -msdl

and you should be good to go. (Substitute -mx11 for -msdl if you like.)

I agree with you FWIW - I think it's a good thing that there are now Linux users who think like Windows users, so that Linux is a real alternative to Windows. But I don't see how you can understand concepts like "command to launch" without also understanding how to use a terminal. Ho hum. I guess if we had done the long-discussed port of the savefile chooser we wouldn't be here.

Thanks for your how-to!

I think I leave the details of IT for the time when I learn programming. If I learn programming, that is.
