it's running fine in OSX. Plus, the high scores don't keep writing gibberish anymore. I think.

your probably right... so what can i do about it? changing os's really isnt an option. If I ever pick up an old pc real cheap, i'll probably run some unix based os on it but I can't really do that to my only box right now. 3.09b used to work but now it doesn't. Could a recent win update cause this problem? Could it have anything to do with the borg running on 3.05?
anyone else on vista having these problems?

good thing you didn't ask "anyone else on vista having problems? then you would have been flooded. I had vista, came on the cheap machine from WalMart. I ended up reformatting the drive and sticking XP on it. Took a while to get all the drivers and such. Boy was it worth it. |

It's what I can do about it.
The current win-main.c has some suspected font-related resource leakage (that slows down startup by a factor of at least five, in addition to other problems like this), but my first patch for this backfired against a difference between V3.0.6 win-main.c and V3.0.9b (the patch works against my own variant, but reintroduces a rather ugly Vista-only font bug on V3.0.9b). It looks like I'll have to revise the patch to not backfire. This may be a while (I'm at a bad point in my work loading). |

I installed about 6 windows updates(for some reason the auto update was not turned on), rebooted my computer 3 times, re-download r988,manually copied the angband.ini from 3.05 into r988, uninstalled the borg and all previous versions of angband, and now everything works fine. Not sure if which of the above actually fixed it but everything looks good. It takes a few seconds to load but its not that noticeable.
It was a bit frustrating to watch my wife play on her computer, running win XP, and me not be able to play on mine. Looks like tonight we can go back to our competitions.

Not a Vista problem... XP here and 3.0.9 won't launch.
3.0.6 works fine.

Try killing programs or something and see if one is blocking them.
I know on my XP machine, angband doesn't start up until I close all my dos prompt windows. It's rather bizarre. - Frank |
