I like the idea of splitting those. For those bemoaning the weakening of Half-troll mages, perhaps SP regeneration could be a class skill gained at lvl 25 or 30. Likewise, let warriors gain HP regeneration at the same level. Priests should also get the SP regen, though maybe not 'till level 35-40. I wouldn't give it to the hybrids. You could give SP regen to gnomes if you wanted without giving them an endgame advantage this way.

The net effect would be nill for Troll mages except for the early game, when they are typically strong enough to melee foes anyway.

I really like how this would make some items more caster-oriented and make equipment selection less trivial.

4 out of the top 50 priests though including number 1. That's number 3 behind dwarves and dunedain.

I have been playing for a few months with the restriction of never casting satisfy hunger from a book. Unfortunately, I believe my play style means that my experience with this is of dubious value generalizing to others.

Food was originally, i.e. in the very first roguelike, introduced to force diving over level clearing. Limited amount of food per game means you cannot afford long fight-a-bit-then-rest-and-repeat tactics. Since the intent has been removed, I think the mechanic should be removed as well.
I think this spell should be kept for rogues. Put in Tenser's for mage/ranger?

move Satisfy Hunger to Tensers for mages
move to Purifications and Healing for priests
eliminate the scroll entirely

make food a common drop, especailly at shallower levels - m and ' should often drop slime molds - humaniods should drop rations, dark elves and angels drop waybread - add a few more flavors of food for other creatures as well maybe - "dragon steaks", "mumak jerky", "hydra slices" - whatever. Point being to make food a constant issue, but obtainable as a consumable item.

at deeper DL food could get increasingly rare. Either by distribution of drops, or by forcing the code to give food less often as DL increases.

Basically, I think the spells should be re-distributed for all three classes of magic users. Rogues get spells based on stealth, greed and trickery (lots of detections, displacements). Mages get primarily offensive spells. I think rangers should get spells from both magic and prayer books (but only 1 or 2 spells from each), that are healing, sleeping, master of nature-type spells. He is a jack-of-all trades, master of none.

I think we need more differentiation between the spell for each class. But I know that everyone has their own system for re-drawing the spell books for the classes!

How about adding a rod of satiation?
It would solve all your problems.

No, it does not. The problem is not lack of food. The problem is that a warrior devotes a slot to it, and no one else does.

If you want to keep hunger in the game, at an absolute minimum make satisfy hunger a priest-only spell. Let the mage casters enjoy the fun of devoting a slot to food just like warriors.
