Prevents paralysis Mithril Shield of Preservation [16 +44] Dropped by a master mystic at 4800 feet Provides resistance to shards, disenchantment. Sustain strength, dexterity, constitution Sustain your life force Highest AC from shield I've ever seen, but all resistances are redundant, including sustains.... Could replace it with: Wicker Shield 'Tancar' [2, +9] <+9> Found lying on the floor in a vault at 1850 feet +9 speed Provides resistance to lightning speed +32 AC 281 or speed +41 AC 232 Either way, I think Sauron will be very dead soon (grinding at DL98 for elusive Wrath of God. Maybe I don't even need it) |

Bring potions of speed and take the one with more AC. Saving turns required to heal is effective speed, and speed gains drop off rapidly after +30.

g) Leather Scale Mail of Resist Cold (-1) [20,+8] {cursed}
Taken from a chest found at 300 feet (level 6) It makes you vulnerable to cold attacks, but resistant to fire. Provides resistance to cold. More fancy than a simple armor of resist fire! |

And strictly worse, because it has the net effect of removing rCold from the rest of your equipment if you have it.

So my lvl 16 hobbit rogue was bumbling about on dlvl 23 when a purple \ showed up on item detection. I cant wield it - merely lifting it. After heaving it towards a wolf this is what shows:
a) a Mace of Disruption (5d8) (+4,+9) {??} Found lying on the floor of a special room at 1150 feet (level 23) You do not know the full extent of this item's powers. Branded with lightning. Combat info: You are too weak to use this weapon. 1.0 blow/round. With +1 STR and +0 DEX you would get 1.6 blows Average damage/round: 91.9 vs. creatures not resistant to lightning, and 39.2 vs. others. The "special room" was X-shaped with 2 staircases on top and bottom respectively. Good thing I found a stack of 2 str potions earlier, so I only need 1 more point. |

It's amazing how much difference a find like this makes in the early game, or even midgame, unless you are playing full-caster. ESP or big damage or both makes a huge difference in survival. In the late game, no one item is likely to make such a difference in player power.

My dwarf priest just found Healing and Sanctuary on DL6. Immediately afterward Wormtongue showed up and dropped Full Plate Armor of Resistance +8. (Sadly, I'm too weak to wear it yet.) Pretty sweet for that early in the game, though.
