AWOL for a while

I thought I should make a public note of the fact I'm not going to have as much time for Angband over the next few months as I have in the past. I don't anticipate spending much time on the game until maybe December, and I'm not sure how long this situation will last. I'm not done with the game yet, though.

There are clearly gameplay issues in 3.1.1. I am happy to encourage and provide infrastructure for anyone who wants to have a stab at fixing them. One way of doing this would be to make a patched version, which you could do in the "official" subversion repository on a branch, or just modify the code locally and I'll be happy to host such patched versions and work with you on merging them with the main code if they work. I don't have the time to get my head back into "thinking about coding Angband" space for a while, but I would like to encourage people who are interested to have a go.

At the moment I am not really reading the forums, so I've probably missed a few bugs. Apologies. If you need to make sure that something comes to my attention, email me (andi@takkaria.org).

Damn you and your non-traditional ways. You're supposed to just be silent for 12-18 months and then pop up and say you're not maintaining any more. Or just stay silent.

Seriously though, thanks for letting us know, and have fun with your other projects.

For some reason, I feel a palpable sense of responsibility for the game, and even somewhat accountable to the people who play it. I'm not sure it's healthy, myself.

Not only will your code contributions be missed while you're away, but your role as arbiter and decision-maker over various aspects of the design will probably make its absence felt too. I have a list of tickets I've tagged as wanting to work on, once I recover from my current all-consuming obsession (EU: Rome). I have pretty much discussed all of them with you on IRC, but thought it might help to post my recollections of your views here, in case I get around to any of them while you're away and cause any howls of outrage:

- you're happy to try a new calculation for magic device skill (#715, plus #419 and #483)
- you decided we should get rid of the .raw files and assume that any platform will support the parsing of text files (#953 and #960)
- you're happy for me to tweak both standard artifacts (#526) and heavy armours (#951) to try and make more of them useful more often
- you decided that using player-turns in item descriptions was a bad idea (no #957 is a wontfix and you want the recharge duration reverted to game turns)
- your preference is that Linux packages are built using --with-private-dirs (#40 and #134)
- you're happy for home contents to be browseable via the knowledge menu (#879 and #256 - not sure where you stand on including last seen store inventories in the knowledge menu, which would obsolete #503)
- you're happy for me to try abstracting element types into a structure (#803, though it wouldn't look like the one suggested in the ticket)

That's way more than I'll achieve while you're gone, so at least people have some fair warning. I'm still trying to set up the angband git repo on git.debian.org, and package Dubtrain's sound files for Debian non-free.

Have a good break,

CC

I should mention that removing *.raw files is a very elementary change (I'm leaving the data directory support in place in Zaiband for now), and helps immensely with the object-orientation changes; all proper C++ variants should do this. (In C++, most of the fields in the maxima struct actually should be static member variables.)

[Big bang conversion of the cave to an object failed Oct 3 2009 (good thing I have a stable-dev backup locally), but in general other changes have been working fine.]

If it helps, I now have mp3 versions of Dubtrain's sounds as standard in the FA repository.

Thanks for the tip. How/where did you flag the non-GPL non-Angband licence issue?

Dubtrain's sounds are under a Creative Commons licence, which the Launchpad people are fine with (at least, they're fine with the one for David Gervais' graphics, and I don't see why the sound one should be any different). I've got my own version of V's copying.txt in my top directory, and have the standard dual licence on the front page.
