Thumbs up PosChengBand: Post your POSSESSOR progression guides here!

I would really love to hear out experienced players how do they progress playing as possessor, what bodies they prefer on certain level and why. Would be really nice to post here in a similar form, as I would try to write mine (like a list of LVL, body, why this body).

- First steps: Fruit bat or any other +10 speed creature
- L3-4: Wolf (or Fang) Farmer's Maggot dog (+10Sp also, nice damage)
- L10: Panther or Tiger in wilderness (pretty dangerous to obtain)

Then my body was destroyed and I barely managed to possess War Bear. Not bad body, but no speed bonus. Now at depth L12, very hard, trying to find myself something good, but no luck. I have tried Baby dragon, Dark Elven Warrior - they are pretty pathetic.

For me:

Literally asap from starting (yes, these are what I really try to go for within starting a Possessor character from scratch);
i.e. at clvl 1 thru clvl 15:
A) Bloodfang the Wolf
B) Green naga / red naga

I usually go for Bloodfang the Wolf or a naga from the swampy areas south (the northern one is way more dangerous).
-Bloodfang the Wolf - he's fast (+10 Base Speed), has good AC, and bites hard
-Nagas - can wield weapons, has good innate damage, and has most humanoid-like slots except for footwear

At clvl 15:
A) Half-orc from the wilderness - I'd go for a Half-orc for the big STR/DEX boost
B) Tiger from the wilderness - Maybe a Tiger for the +10 speed, but Tigers last until clvl 17.

I would go with the Half-orc until clvl 18.

At clvl 18:
A) Lizard King from the swamps north or south of Outpost - has +3 Base Speed, but has big boosts to STR/DEX and hits hard, can last through clvl 25. Yes, you can get a Lizard King while fighting it as a Half-orc

At clvl ~20-25:
A) Sabre-tooth tiger: +10 Base Speed with awesome damage. How to even get this thing? You can scour the wilderness areas near the swamp north of Outpost, which takes forever. Or you can try the Old Man Willow quest, which can be brutal in the early game. If you're going to do the Old Man Willow quest and you're still a Lizard King, equip as much armor before fighting it. Get your melee into the 100s at least. Have about 30+ !CCW and 30+ Teleportation Scrolls ready. And then go for it.

Those above are my staple routine when playing Possessors, from clvl 1 to 25

I just got Wood Spider corpse and it is pretty good at damage, and one of its attacks is poison. Cannot use weapons, but it has 4 slots for rings. And one more unpleasant thing: it cannot wear light source. But otherwise a nice body with +10 speed.

Most things with out a light slot have a sight range of 10. Pretty worth it till you have telepathy & high power lights

Ive played lots of mimics, I can tell you my favorite forms that would also work for a possessor.

At the beginning when you dont have any gear, maggots dogs, freesia, cave spider all work great. Once you have some gear that needs a humanoid form, then I like novice archer best if you can get it, otherwise go for any of the black p's (the rogues) or nagas

Around level 15 I like switching to hound form. Any elemental hound is playable, but multi-hued hound is especially great.

From there you can continue with higher level hounds, or monks also make good mid level options, but you probably want to start looking for good unique forms at those levels. the round table knights are fun ones.

Ultra-elite paladin is an awesome late game form, great to use while you are hunting for an endgame unique form.

Why is it good?

Assuming you have a weapon/armor kit for human equipment slots, its got good hp, some helpful resists, reflection, good spells to support melee (heal, bless, heroism), and its a form thats easy to obtain, once you get into the arena dungeon. I think the stronger angels are good too, just a little harder to get.

While those stronger angels (Planetars, Solars, etc.) can be mimicked for the Mimic characters, they don't drop corpses for Possessor characters.

So another couple of good early forms: novice mage & ranger. Both come with detect monster & are capable of getting decent with a sling. Not convinced a fast doggie can take down a bigger target then a shooter & a bunch of phase scrolls. You might want to carry ?Light if you plan on hunting in the wilderness at night with an archer.
