The Six Summits of Angband

To my Fellow Angbanders,

So, I've set myself the goal of winning the game with each class. So far, I've beat the game with a Warrior, Ranger, and Paladin, although my winning warrior game was lost due to a crash and then I failed in my second fight vs. Morgoth due to some bad luck vs. shatter damage.

This month I've been making time (at quite the expense to my real life!) to beat the game with the Mage class. I brought Morgoth within 10% of his health with a Gnome mage before I ran out of healing and then bit the dust due to "the strain of casting banishment" when I made a greedy dash to pick up a choice artifact and I wanted to clear some trash mobs to get to it... the 37 or so hp I had at the time was not enough for all the "D's" or "U's" or "L's" or whatever it was I trying to banish in the dungeon at the time... oops!

Then I starting playing an "Iron Mage", just running the class, iron man style and I've levelled up into the 40's now before getting one-shotted. It tends to take a death for a Mob to burn into my memory its capabilities... oh, so and so Mobs have a 200+ dmg nether bolt or, in the latest death, "Saruman summons dragons, an Ancient Gold, Scatha, and a Great Wyrm of Thunder, hmmm Ancient Dragons of any color I can handle at my current ~450 health, Scatha too, I have all my resists up, Wyrm of Thunder deals lightning, got that covered..." except the Great Wyrm of Thunder blasts sound at 500hp at full health, not lightning... hmm Great Wyrm of Storms vs Thunder, lightning vs. sound, no sound resist... now I've got that straight after another 20 or so hours of play!

Sadly, real life calls and since I tend to be a binge player it will probably be several months before I try to scale this peak again. Until then...

Hoorah for the six summits of Angband, still three to go!

You are leaving out one of "The Summits". Come on, go for the SEVEN summits! A win with each race/class combination. Trust me ... it's doable.

1. North America - Denali (6,194 m - 20,320 ft).
2. South America - Aconcagua (6,961 m - 22,837 ft).
3. Europe - Mont Blanc (4,810 m - 15,780 ft) OR Elbrus (5,642 m - 18,510 ft) [DEPENDING ON DEFINITION OF THE BORDER OF EUROPE].
4. Asia - Everest (8,848 m - 29,028 ft).
5. Australia/Oceania - Kosciuszko (2,228 m - 7,309 ft) OR Puncak Jaya (4,884 m - 16,023 ft) [DEPENDING ON WHETHER YOU INCLUDE ONLY AUSTRALIA OR ALL OF OCEANIA AS A CONTINENT].
6. Antarctica - Vinson (4,892 m - 16,049 ft).
7. Africa - Kilimanjaro (5,895 m - 19,340 ft) [THE ONLY ONE I'VE CLIMBED - Macheme and Arrow Glacier route up, Marango route down].

Another variation goes by the tectonic plates, in which case the Europe summits are dropped, Mauna Kea in Hawaii (4,207 m - 13,802 ft) is added for the Pacific plate, and Australia/Oceania remains an open question as to which summit, as Puncak Jaya is technically on the tiny Maoke plate.

Likewise, I imagine there are several variations for the "Seven Summits" of Angband. Good luck with yours!

1. Win with each class.
2. Win with each race.
3. Win with each race/class combination.
4. Iron man.
5. Fists only.
6. No artifacts.
7. Store bought shovel (You go, MattB!!!)

Whatever crazy, difficult, impossible, scenario Debo comes up with for the competitions!!!

Haha, Ingwe, I feel you! Although I don't have the time for your list... if I only do one summit by those standards then so be it!

Is the difference between fists and shovels so huge? Also, one of the summits should be bookless artifactless egoless hobbit mage.

The difference is going from 1d2 (+13) or so (depending on how many enchantment scrolls you can successfully dump on the thing) to 1d1. For a warrior that's a good 80 or so damage per round difference, which is pretty substantial. Shovels are also probably a lot better at getting critical hits than fists are.

Eddie's the only person crazy enough to have done the artifactless egoless mage, and I don't know of anyone who's tried to add bookless to that. If artifactless egoless mage is climbing Mount Everest, then bookless artifactless egoless mage is climbing Mount Olympus...without a spacesuit. That's the one on Mars, if you've forgotten.

This will take some time, as I don't have much time to devote to this atm, but I'll try to complete the challenge.

Is there an ingame way to see if an item is "ego" or not ?

Pseudo id used to indicate it, but once identified it wouldnt show up; and with runes, all is different now.

While at it, whats the point of classifying some items as ego ? Power would make sense, but then speed rings should be ego; multiple runes also would make sense, but then stat rings would be ego. So is there a justification other than historical ?
