Sangband; for newbies

I know that Sangband is meant for skilled Angband players but I picked it up as a newbie and I haven't stopped playing it since a few months back when 1.0 first came out.

The fact the game is challenging (I've died hundreds of times and have never cheated once) but extremely fun. The only class I don't have trouble playing with is Duranden or Dark Elf.

In any case, it's funny how a tougher variant of Angband has serious appeal to newbies. What do you guys think about this? Does Sangband have more appeal to newbies than other variants? What does everyone think about Sangband being the very first Angband picked up by a newbie? I have a lot of trouble going below level 4 in Sangband (after a month or so of play) but have no problems in other variants. I love the challenge.

I haven't found Sang harder than Vanilla or other variants I played. I found it considerably less boring than Vanilla, thou

Wasn't S 1.0 released only like one week ago instead of "months ago"?!?

Anyway: Every *band including V is hard to start with and in all of them you'll die a lot, not just when you are new. However, with the endless possibilies of starting in S, i would consider it a bad choice to start with. Again, not because of the difficulty, but for the big number of choices to be made.

My suggestion for you would be to start with a nicely rolled warrior in V, and to play that one until you can get him to maybe dlvl40. At that point you should have learned the basics that are true for all *bands including S. You know, things like escapes and heals and whatever. This suggestion also seems to fit your style as, iirc, your first S char posted here was an attempt at a basic warrior.

Must have been Sangband version 0.99 or something but I've been playing it since back in May.
I have trouble getting too far in Sangband.

1.0.0 was released on 7/4, followed by several hotfixes, followed by "1.0.0 final" on 27/5.
