The CRPG Addict has begun playing Angband. Link inside!

Ten years ago, the CRPG Addict set himself a ridiculously ambitious goal: to play, and win where possible, every computer-based RPG ever made, in order of release.

A decade on, and he is still madly at it. Some years into his playing, he discovered that his original list of games was woefully incomplete, and now alternates between playing games from the old list (he is up to 1993), and the new list of missed titles.

And today, he has begun Angband!

https://crpgaddict.blogspot.com/2021...d-24-1993.html

He has played a number of roguelikes in the past. Fairly early on, he played Nethack, and quite enjoyed it. Moria, sadly, he did not groove on as much (it's kind of clear that he imprinted on Nethack, it being his first roguelike).

So, follow along as he plays - he tends to post two or three times a week (he may be playing another game too, with interleaved posts). Note that he points out he will break his personal rules and allow some degree of savefile backing up: it isn't realistic for him to devote the amount of time required to fully master and then win massive roguelikes anymore. But it will be fun to see his impressions, and to compare them to other roguelikes he's played.

Useful links: here (also linked above) is his page that lists each game by name with links to each blogpost for those games; and here is a similar page but organized by year of release instead of alphabetically.

And if you haven't checked out the Addict's blog before, look through the lists for old favorite RPG games, to see his take on them (and note that his rating system results in a score that is not a measure of how an old game was, quality wise, for its day. Instead, his rating is intended to be a "from today's standpoint" rating. (and it works, btw! over time, average score for games slowly drifts up, generally)).

It's also important to emphasize that the rating score is based on what *he likes*. For example, he really values open world, NPC interactions and innovation a lot more than I do., So there are some games that he rates highly that I don't like (Might and Magic, Ultima), and some games that he's at best a grudging fan of (like the Wizardry games) that I adore.

That being said, it is a very interesting and insightful rating system, and he does a good job of explaining his ratings so it's still a great guide for deciding if you might like a given game or not.
