Help compiling Angband nightly on Linux Mint

Hi, I've been trying to compile Angband on a fresh install of Linux Mint.

I can compile and run the 4.0.5. version with no trouble, just as I've always done. Works fine.

However, when I try the same process with the latest nightly version, there is no error message, but the game seems to crash immediately when I run the program. I see the title screen for a second, then it exits with no error message. I haven't found an error message in ay of the log files either, though it's possible I just haven't been looking in the right place.

Any tips on how to resolve this, or where I might find an error message or some other clue to help diagnose the problem?

The nightlies are savefile incompatible with 4.0.5, so trying to load a 4.0.5 savefile will give the behaviour you're describing.

If that doesn't help, another possibility is the lore file, which will be in your ~/.angband/Angband directory; there has been a change in that that may also cause problems. Try renaming that to something else and see if you have any more luck.

A good general method is to run Angband in the Gnu debugger, gdb; this will possibly print a message on exiting, or halt with gdb message which will allow you to get more info about what has gone wrong.

Let me know if you still can't get anything to work.

@Nick-- he's seeing a crash on the splash screen, before getting a save file. Debugger is only hope.

Nick, thanks a ton. Your advice solved the problem and got me running with the latest nightly.

The problem was apparently BOTH the lore file and my save file. After renaming both, everything seems to be working fine.

I'm looking forward to seeing the latest changes to the game.
