I started paying the current RL's about 6 months ago. I consistently make CL30 with a nice low turn count, but can't seem to turn the corner. Never won.
That was either Hack or an early version of Nethack. It's still the same way, if you are in a shop, grab something, and teleport out the Keystone Cops show up and mob you with cream pies and rubber hoses.

It's best not to do that unless you're a high-level chaotic character (with some item of reflection, for some reason all shopkeepers carry at least a wand of magic missile and usually some elemental wand) and really don't like the shopkeepers. Just leave poor Izchak alone.

I think I had a YASD at some point where I was in a shop, fighting a mimic IIRC, and stupidly decided to read an unidentified scroll. Turned out to be teleport, the shopkeeper came after me and that was the end of that character.

2 years. Haven't won Vanilla, Z, ADOM, ToME, DEFINATELY not Nethack, and I've never played any of the really old ones, (Rogue, Hack, etc) so yeah... but by God I shan't give up!

Wow. It was SO good to read this thread and discover that there are so many people who have been trying for longer than me. I'm like GSN - don't have the methodical patience to win (btw, I guess you're not the author of GSNband, 'cos he'd have been playing for longer). I've been trying regularly for 9 years, but if you count Moria that becomes 19 years, though there was a long gap (~6 yrs) in between.

I remember my mom talking about this guy at work who played this weird game where all the people were letters or something. Later, that guy gave us his old computer (my first computer) and a bunch of software on 5 1/4" floppies. Out of all those old games, Moria was hands-down the best.

It's been about 15 years of sporadic play, and I haven't beaten any variant legit. I beat Vanilla and Zangband through copius savefile cheating. (I'm starting to reform my ways, but it's difficult.)

I have been playing first Moria then Angband since 1994, I think, and I am currently obsessed with NPPAngband.

I haven't had any winner yet. And maybe I don't want to since I am afraid that might take the fun out of the game...:

Once back in 1995 I save scummed a char down to Morgoth, but then lost intrest and didn't play for a long time. Haven't save scummed since, and never will.

My first roguelike was Angband on my Amiga 1200 under Ben Harrison's era. I think I just got the game from Aminet, tried it and got addicted.
It was a 2.7.x version, probably around 1996. Make it 12-13 years then, on and off.
I used to save-scum heavily (something I stopped doing only 2 years ago) and still never won : I often overwrote backup saves with ones that were unusable (one turn before unavoidable death), otherwise I lost my save files or interest in my character after a too long break from Angband.

I then started to try several roguelikes and Angband variants : Rogue, ADOM, NetHack, Omega, POWDER, Yipe!, CthAngband, ZAngband, PernAngband/ToME... I keep on giving a try to new and old roguelikes whenever I stumble upon them but I spent more time on Vanilla (and to a lesser extent, ToME) than any other. I won none of them anyway.

And now, I'm back to V and intend to win it (or die trying... again ).
My current character is also the best non-cheating one (dump not exactly up to date, she's level 30 at dlvl 30). Wish her luck
I just need to play more often or I might lose this character savefile like many others...

Sidenote:
In order to detect other roguelike players, I use the Borg screensaver. It's easy to see which people recognize the patterns
I found one or two *banders this way and initiated a few of the less confused people attracted by the screensaver to the way of *banding.
So far, none has played more than a few games (although they liked it).

I thought Yipe! would not be very famous but I believe it was pretty popular among Mac users when it came out.
I haven't played it for a decade but I believe the game had a touch of stupid humour that I found quite fun.

The game I usually promote at this point is Elona. It's translated from Japanese and has that mix of cute, sexy and ewww going on in the background that the Japanese can do so well.
