Danger Will Robinson...
"Danger Will Robinson..." That's the message I get when I try downloading Angband 3.5.0 for OS.
My PC laptop died on me and I finally made the change over to Apple. Uploading everything onto my new MacBookPro and wanted to make sure I had my favorite computer game, Angband, of course. I'm sure I'm doing something obvious, but I haven't figured it out. Even after I turned off the Security feature so I could download from anywhere, I get the following message when I run the downloaded Angband app: "Danger Will Robinson Cannot create 'Volumes/Angband-v3.5.0/Angband.app/Contents/Resources/lib/info'" An Angband folder is created in my Documents folder, along with the subfolders apex, save, and user. But that's as far as the download installation gets. What stupid thing am I doing wrong? |

The downloaded file is a disk image - which is like a disk, but software. What you need to do is open the disk image file (as I guess you are already doing) and then copy the Angband app to somewhere (your applications folder, or just the desktop).
I suspect what you're trying to do is run Angband straight out of the disk image - which seems reasonable enough (I've done it more than once...), but fails because Angband needs a permanent place to refer to, and the disk image is temporary.

Thanks, Nick. I suspected it was just part of my clueless learning curve for the switch to Apple. But, hey, I did use the Terminal to enter a command line that made Finder show hidden files so I could retrieve the .pst file off of my PC harddrive. Maybe not completely clueless.

Okay, so I AM completely clueless.... Following Nick's instructions, I can now play Angband on the MacBookPro, but can't seem to find the edit, lib, etc., file folders. The only sub-folders showing up in the Angband documents folder are apex, save, and user. Used to be I could make some edits in the player and spell files. Do I not have that capability in the Mac? Or am I just not looking in the right place for the missing folders?

You aren't looking in the right place. Right-click on Angband.app, select "Show Package Contents", then go Contents -> Resources -> lib.
The stuff in the Angband documents folder is all the files that the game needs to modify when running; the stuff in the Angband executable package is theoretically not changing while the program runs, but you can still modify it and have those changes take effect next time. |

Thanks, Derakon! Eventually maybe I'll figure out this whole PC to Mac transition.

Same Danger error message, different content
My Angband package (reinstalled after some trouble earlier, not its first install) is now in a subfolder of Applications, but is giving me
"Danger, Will Robinson! Cannot create '/private/var/folders/g5/yyz_p0mn45b2hxv7bz3991fw000gn/T/AppTranslocation/... Angband.app/Contents/Resources/lib/info' (erm, if there's a point to my quoting the whole thing, I'll do so...) Halp? |

That's odd. I gather this is OSX, but what version? And what version of Angband? Where did you install the program? It looks like it's trying to create some files in a location it doesn't have permission to write to.
You might try putting the program in somewhere like your Downloads or Documents folder and running it from there. |

Oh, sorry. OS X (now MacOS) Sierra, but almost the same error happened in attempts under earlier versions too. Happens with 3.5.1 (and I think with 3.4.1 also, not sure, but definitely with 3.5.1. I'm able to get 3.4.1 to run last few days, but...) Also with some of the "-dirty"s. Will have to double-check... *sigh*... Ow. Yes, downloads or documents might be better than Applications, will try that...
This is from expanding downloaded stuffit archives, not after trying to compile from source or something. (Edit: there's also practically nothing in the "Documents" folder, which is discouraging, and it probably doesn't want to share information with the earlier versions of Angband on my system- too many conflicting versions of monster info for instance. Hrm. Contents - Resources - Lib does have xtra, edit, pref, help, lib and script folders, though, which may be encouraging.) Last edited by eschiss1; November 13, 2016 at 17:45. |
