Best class / race combo to grab the One Ring.
I want to embark on a journey. The journey of finding the One Ring. It is just one of those things where I will feel like playing Angband in the near future and hop in my futile attempt to grab The Ring instead of accumulating wins. What's the best class / race combo would you help me to hasten the proccess somehow?

I've never found the one ring. I've found Ringil twice though, which suggest that the one ring is pretty rare.
I think it might be a long and frustrating game if your aim is to find the one ring.

I'm not interested in playing Angband non-stop until I find the Ring. I like the idea of having a really long game where I can return to have a meaningful objective to stay alive at DL120. It will sure gonna hurt like hell when it dies in the long run.

high elf mage.
Activate Arkenstone, zap every mob with Mass Banishment, clear greater vaults on DL99. I found The One Ring twice, once very early in my gaming days, on a ridiculously shallow dungeon level. Had no idea how to play, so i died to some stupid mob. |

Rogue. Race doesnt matter, high elf is good when xp penalty is irrelevant, what matters is the object detection spell. Mass banishment works too, but you actually have to enter the vault and search every object with a mage, whereas a rogue just detects outside and leaves if he sees no ring. And getting to the vaullt is normally no problem either with high stealth - no need to banish everything when its asleep.

i have to say, i have never played a rogue. i have never played a thief-like character in any game, ever. In live RPG, it's generally a warrior, and in computer RPGs, mages.

Rogue or mage, I agree. Detection for Rogue, and banishment for mage make a big difference. (Though once you are deep enough, !enlightenment is probably sufficiently common to pre-ID everything in vaults.)
Rogue has a quicker start than mage, though. |

My mage was just lucky, but my mage found it by virtue of a high turn count. If you really want it, spamming vaults below 4000' will eventually find it. I don't know what the mage and rogue detection spells show, but Sense Surroundings only shows a generic object, so you may want to go to a pre-4.0 release. |
