Your weapon will look something like this:

     3.8 blows/round.
     With +0 STR and +2 DEX you would get 4.1 blows
     Average damage/round: 133.6 vs. creatures not resistant to cold,
     and 94 vs. others.
Yes, more strength will get you more damage per blows, and will let you use heavier weapons. But it will always be DEX that you need most for more blows.

You may want that, when deciding whether or not to fight a monster. It will tell you whether it breathes poison for 700 damage, or nether for 510, etc. But you can find that out jusf as well by copying monster.txt in lib/gamedata to lore.txt in lib/user

STR and DEX are equally important. But the half-troll's racial bonuses give better inherent STR than DEX, so it's more important to increase DEX by other means.

Given that you're new, if you haven't given yourself full monster memory by copying monster.txt into lore.txt, you're going to want to keep that rod and use it frequently, so that you can recognize new enemies as being too dangerous to fight before you get your butt kicked.

Ya, main problem seems to be by the time I see them combat started so probing them will give them a round of attacks.

Not if they are still far away. Sure you lose a round of archery. But it is far more important to bail out early from a fight that could kill you in a turn or two. Here is a partial list
* Kavlax
* Gorlim
* drolem (bad news for a warrior)
* Ancient Multi-hued Dragon
* Etherial drake (these are really bad news for a HT Warrior, unless you are immune to confusion.)
* Death drake and great crystal Drakes can kill you quick, too. But they aren't quite as bad as the others.

Normally they don't teleport too far away and will come back after you, if they can find a path.
You can use detect spells/devices to try to locate them and go after them. You will get back any item or gold that was stolen if you kill them.
