Sign here if you recently got pwnt by the RNG

So there I was moseying through DL 6 or 7 after falling through a trap door. I find a chest, open it, only to find a bow of might (or something). I remember somebody saying that if a ranger can find one at a low level they will most likely be set for a while. I enter the next room, only to set off a trap which summons 10 (!!) novice warriors, a novice mage, and a wildcat. Phase door fails and I get eaten... *sigh* =(

Edit: I'm a noob and didn't fully understand what RNG is please ignore the above post -_-;

That's not really the RNG, that's just the odds catching up with you.
If you are diving slowly, and you aren't searching for traps, you will eventually die. (If you are diving faster and aren't searching for traps, you will die more quickly. But your chances of having convenient trap detection are higher.)

Also, you would need a lot (>5) of ?Phase door to get away from a big mob like that. ?Recall helps too.

Anyway, at dl 6 it was probably a short-bow of might, which is no better than an enchanted longbow, although getting it early gives you a nice boost in shooting power.

My most recent death to RNG pwnage was:

1. Go down disconnected stairs around dl 25, no Free Action.
2. Find myself immediately adjacent to a Magic Mushroom Patch and a bunch of Stone Trolls.
3. The mushroom patch confuses me, gives me hallucinations, and slows me. Also, a Fire Vortex breathes and wakes up the stone trolls.
4. Drink CCW to relieve confusion, but the stone trolls clobber me before I can teleport level.

Time to restart, this time with connected stairs.

Excuse me being a noob, but what is RNG and what does the connected, disconnected stair option actually do?

Normally, when you descent or ascent, you start the level on stairs. If you play with disconnected stairs, you don't.

RNG is an acronym for "Random [Number] Generator", as far as I know.

also known as the "random number god"
bow down or get pwnt

EDIT: get pwnt sooner or later whether you bow down or not

..never used "pwnt" before and can only tell what it means by context clues..

Ok, here's a RNG type story. It was a while ago, but it's one of my more memorable losses:
I'm a priest, and I'm at about DL10, slowly but steadily taking Wormtongue down. Finally, many ?Phase Doors and OoDs later, he goes down. He's directly to my left, about 8 spaces away, and I see that his one and only drop is a yellow '~'... except I already have the Phial courtesy of Smeagol. Wow! The RNG giveth!
Without thinking, I move towards it... only to fall through a trap door the very next space. While it's true I forgot that Wormy creates traps, out of ALL THE POSSIBLE KINDS, the ONE KIND that's between me and what I assumed was the Star of Elendil is a %$(# trap door. The RNG taketh away...

well.. Im no noob to gaming, only Angband. Im started MMOs with everquest, and all the way up to WoW before I stopped playing them. Way too much time involed, and new I play online FPS games, so I have done my fair share of pwnin and gettin pwnt. But this game is relentless. Never would I have thought something like this could get my heart rate up. Im totally addicted. Im a pretty sharp person and usually can master games very quickly, and have played table top D&D in the past so this is not a new concept at all... but it seems all I do is bow down to the RNG and get my arse pwnt constantly. For such a small simple easy to play game, it is SO freakin deep and difficult. I LOVE ANGBAND I think I will be playing for years as that seems the average time it takes to get lucky enough to get a character that can win. Thanks again for all your help and comments.

well if u r new to angband, welcome aboard and chances are that like most of us around here... you will be either gone in a week or still hanging around in 5, 10 or 15 years time! (I'm at 15 and counting... and no real serious @ yet!)

I don't know if I can really count this, but I think it's due to the RNG.

I was a mage, level 2, dlvl 2 also. I notice a string of C's in a corridor, and one by one I start magic missle-ing them. The last few I figure I can hack with my dagger. So I hold down the right arrow key. What's this? I'm getting my butt kicked? Oh snap, it's Farmer Maggot's dog!

Needless to say, I died.
