ToME2.3.5 question

So I have been loading up old ToME and played an alchemist for a few days now, finally got artifact creation but I cant increse the pval. There is a blank option "g" in the manu that isnt accessible, which I suspect should be the one to do that. Is this a change from 2.3.4 ? When I downloaded 2.3.5 (from Zaimoni's page) I wasnt aware that there had been a new version since I used to play back in the days, otherwise I would have stuck to familiar 2.3.4.

Has there been tampering with the alchemist from 2.3.4 -> 2.3.5 or am I just to dumb to make artifacts ?

I have also installed 2.3.4, but the save file isnt compatible
