* If you detect a monster or cool treasure on the other side of the screen, and tunnel your way to it because it's easier than walking around
* If you regularly hit a dead end and tunnel to check whether there's a secret door there
* If you often tunnel your way through secret doors without ever finding them

What else would you tunnel with?? Swords work fine!

I actually did this once. Well, it wasn't 10 levels, more like the first 3. I kept thinking to myself, "Man, I thought a half-troll fighter should be able to take out low level monsters better than this!" I was getting whipped by a large kobold (while slapping him silly) when I started searching my inventory for anything that I might use to kill it. That's when I saw the broad sword sitting there--brand spankin' new, not even a scratch on it.

In some variants (ToME and Sangband come to mind) certain classes or skills make a character SO good at unarmed combat that they literally do more damage with no weapon than with a sword or club! I suppose it makes sense for a level 20 monk or something, but c'mon, surely a level 1 character who puts a few points into Unarmed Combat shoudn't be able to punch for more damage than he can stab! :P
