First time playing for years, and I get this as my first 2000' level.
I am so fucking dead...
How do you get a checkerboard vault and a pit on the same level? (screenshot in zip file at end of post, includes complete monster list) Code:

Gosh!!! That sure looks like a nasty troll pit!!! Just kidding. You know, I had a very similar experience with my only V winner --- a greater vault at depth ~40 provided me with several top-class artifacts. This could be a big break for you. Just be very careful, and I hope you brought along some wands of teleport other!!! EDIT: Ooh, looks like you did. Well you should be all set then! Let us know how it goes! I'm going to start attempting the vault now.
Uniques: Scatha, Dwar, Smaug, Azriel, Feagwath. I've never seen any of them before, so I don't know anything about their attacks or even what level they're supposed to be on. I tend not to look at the edit files, since it's kinda cheating. I'm glad I took Calris for HP and disenchantment resist. I have poison resist but not nether. I remember enough from years ago that at high (low?) DLs those two resists are essential. I'm going in hasted and just teleporting every single one of those suckers out, grabbing the loot, IDing everything, and hauling the artifacts back home. The only thing that worries me is my speed, base is 3. Here goes! |

So far...
Artifact #1: Glamdring Artifact #2: Isildur Artifact #3: Dethanc Artifact #4: Narthanc Master Lich just completely drained my teleport other wands. Master Lich dropped a Sling of Extra Might (x2) (+15,+15) (+1). I just thought it was funny. Okay, so I'm not teleporting them out. It's just too tempting. Artifact #5: Avavir DAMMIT!!! Lesser Balrog just burned up my only copy of Sorcery and Evocations. I have no other means of gaining haste. Artifact #6: Gorlim Artifact #7: Cesti of Fingolfin Two rows down... being speed +3 sucks. Azriel shot me with a nether ball for hundreds of damage. He's the first thing I've teleported away. Teleported Smaug away. Thankfully, he was at the end of a row, so I could hit the granite at an angle without him immediately seeing me. Just cleared the center. Got Mordenkainen's Escapes. There was some Black DSM and a lot of extremely valuable ego items, all of which I destroyed. Artifact #8: Metal Cap of Thengel With Calris and some Arrows of Slay Dragon (+8,+9), I decided to take on Scatha. Killed him pretty easily. Found Raal's Tome. Artifact #9: Large Leather Shield of Celegorm Artifact #10: LONG BOW OF BARD!!! I got cocky. Figured I could waste a Great Wyrm of Law with Bard and Arrows of Slay Dragon. Result: Almost died in one sound breath. Teleport Other. Lesson learned. Artifact #11: Mormegil. My punishment, I guess. Almost done. I've found a lot of stuff that I really want to keep to *Identify*, but I figure that artifacts are much more powerful, so I destroy them. The latest is a Jewel Encrusted Crown of the Magi +3. Dumpster diving outside of this vault would be very profitable. Maybe someone should make a vault that is just one of these, cleared. ![]() I'm going to look in the edit files to see what to keep. I figure, since *Identify* is being removed in the next version, and with enough experience I would just know what all the artifacts do, it's not too bad. Well, it's done. Cleared the vault, and decided I would keep The Full Plate Armour of Isildur, The Large Leather Shield of Celegorm, and The Set of Cesti of Fingolfin, but I'll keep wearing Caspanion for the poison resist and stat bonuses. OMFG!!! So I step outside of the vault for some reason that escapes me, and the first monster I see is a Death Knight that drops Sorcery and Evocations! I swear, the RNG should be a quest monster...
