Just test-ID'd a weapon of Morgul...

Well maybe I'll let pseudo kick in from now on before test-ID'ing weapons.

Now I'm a level 14 HE Ranger w/ a heavily cursed battle-axe of Morgul. It's poison branded but has aggravation.

Should I just suicide this character? I remember finding Calris at around 3000' in 3.1.0beta but never using it because I never came across a scroll of *Remove Curse* the entire game.

I never quite understood the act of suiciding a character that wasn't going as planned. It just seems wrong. I'd play it out, somewhat recklessly, or even suicidally, if you must.
OTH, can't you use multiple enchantment scrolls to break a heavy curse? I know that I've done it that way before, probably in FA though.

AAVR you have to disenchant it down to +0, +0 (or worse) then re-enchant it to positive numbers - and it doesn't always break.

Normally I'd agree with you. But this may rank up there with getting an important stat scrambled. Just don't want to invest a bunch of hours into a game where I have very little hope of ridding myself of the weapon. That game with Calris was the one where I died fighting Morgoth, and I didn't find a single ?*remove curse* the whole game. I'll give enchanting it up a shot, though. Are we sure this works in V?

@Paul: AAVR?

Er, that should have been AIVR. Obviously not on my best forum-posting form today.

AIVR standing for "As I Vaguely Recall".

Anyway I looked at the code and you don't have to disenchant it down to +0,+0. However the chance to remove-curse only occurs if the bonus is increased and is above zero (after increasing). In other words if it is +15 already then it isn't going to increase and you won't remove any curses no matter how many times you try. If it's -15 then you have to enchant it 15 times before you start getting chances to break the curse.

There is a 25% chance of breaking curses each time you successfully enchant (to above zero).

In my experience, only one of the negative modifiers had to be brought up to zero or better. Therefore a (-17,-5) weapon could be brought to (-17,+0) or better to (have a chance to) break the curse. Enchant weapon always works (?) at lessening a negative modifier and works quite well at adding the lower pluses, so a stack of them should do the trick.

My encounter was with a weapon of Angband in FA. The hard part was amassing the 20 or so scrolls I needed. I seem to recall travelling from town to town. Nick should be able to tell you where the code came from.

Success! Enchanted to_dam up to +4 and that broke the curse. Thanks for the tips, gents.
