[V 3.4.0 RC 1] Question about how to survive "Something screams the word 'DIE!'."

My question is about the following;

> Something screams the word 'DIE!'.
> You die.

Killed by a Vampire lord.

How do characters avoid dying to this effect?

More HP, higher resists of some kind, or higher save from more stats?

This confused me too, coming from Nethack. That's just a raw damage spell, so high saving throw / high HP are the only ways I know of to survive it.

Yeah, the "DIE!" spell is simply the highest version of the "points at you and curses" series. It deals 15d15 damage -- with average damage of 120 and your 138 hitpoints, you had very poor odds of surviving assuming you failed your saving throw. The lesson here is, you really need to be aware of what's in line of sight if you're going to be playing a character made of glass.

Thanks!

Yes I am having fun learning about all the different ways to die, and completing the monster memory as I go. Next time I encounter this I'll have a better chance of surviving.

Although not knowing which monsters use this type of effect, I'll have fun seeing which ones cast it at my glass cannons

edit: spelling

Unless you really enjoy dying a lot, I'd recommend picking a sturdier class with which learn what the monsters can do. Playing as a warrior, paladin, or rogue is a lot more forgiving than playing as a mage.

I've been playing for several years off and on. I usually play mages, occasionally warriors and once in a while try something else.

I'm aware that mages have a higher chance of insta-death, but thats one of the things that keeps my enjoyment high, the tension of life or death decisions.

Even if you like "fragile" mages put some points in CON. It might hurt early game but pays out later. 9 CON is what killed you this time. Use pretty much everything that gives you CON.

If you like spellcasters in general try priest. Dwarf priest especially is quite easy combo (not the fastest, but easiest).

Though some of us like to play a mage without a huge str & con. It feels wierd playing a mage that looks like he's spent all his time at the gym. One of the problems I find with the point's based generator is once you find an optimal balance of stats you tend to play characters that all look identical.

This does remind me a thought I had some time ago: point-based allows too big max stats. For example Dwarf Priest can get 18/50 WIS and still have plenty of points left to distribute around to other stats. In 3.4 this is supposed to be a bit less than it was in 3.3 but I didn't notice any difference.

I think max points put to single stat should be less instead of points total. If you want a super char use roller and just keep rolling until you get something that you might want.

Rolled chars can be fun to play because you get more variety between chars, just like wobbly here says.
