I was trying to ID a helm of clarity by slamming into a door to proc a stun status, was taking a while so I was spamming Ctrl+arrow key. A wraith got right next to me before I noticed and then touched me to death before elbereth could scare it off. My own damn fault.

Saving known confusion/poison/slow potions can be worth it to ID stuff later; at least early game with plentiful item slots.
