Potluck

Hello!

Halls of Mist is not dead, it's just sleeping. I recall the development version being in a pretty good shape, not so far from release. I'm still unlikely to release in near future because I'm going to be awfully busy for months, setting up my one-man desktop publishing firm while also taking care of my teaching job...

HoM is not why I'm here today. Have you heard of a new social media service Potluck? I think it would be a fun way to share and discuss interesting links. Here's two articles about it.

It's brand new, and nobody uses it. You might still be able to grab your first name as your user id. I'm Mikko. At the moment I'm using Potluck to bookmark interesting articles I want to reread.

I'm awfully tired of sharing links in Facebook. This might be a more fun, less ego-centric way to discover and discuss new things. If only I had some friends.

Pretty neat. Any reason Potluck doesn't have a consistent logo? When importing contacts from various other social media platforms, every time Potluck has a different logo!

Also, after doing so, I appear to be trapped in the new-user setup process - there's no button to click to continue! Had to refresh the page for the button to appear...

How do I add a friend by username? I want to add you, but the only way I can add friends is to import them from Facebook, Twitter, or Gmail...

Hmm, try this link to add me (click "I already have an account"):
https://www.potluck.it/users/new_fro...ation/1b0d49b1

You can also use the link to create an account & then add me.

Nope, didn't work. Clicked "already have an account", logged in... and then was dumped at my home page, with no way of accepting your invitation

Also, it's kind of hard to bookmark the home page, because it always redirects me to the first article in my feed. I have to manually edit the bookmark in my browser...

Well that's weird. I'll find a way to note the creators about this!

Hey, if you send me email from your Gmail to mine (miihkali dot lehtinen), Potluck should recognize us as Gmail friends. (If you have a Gmail account.)

I think that's a feature. The most talked about article is on top and already visible. You don't really need the home page for anything, all the articles show on the left panel.

Oh, I thought this was something you created yourself...

Actually, now I have you twice, but it says "Pending". I guess the invite took, but you somehow have to accept?

I signed up as well. Never was a huge fan of Facebook. Through the years my friend count has grown steadily from single digits and now numbers in the 30's, and in actuality that's probably a bit more than reality calls for.

In any case, I'm Buzzkill on Potluck. Don't know if I'll use it or not but feel free to 'friend' me. Let's see where this goes.

buzzkill, 'friending' anyone seems to be awfully hard in Potluck after you've already signed in.

If you send me email to my gmail.com address (miihkali dot lehtinen), Potluck seems to notice it. (If you allowed it to dig your gmail for addresses.) Not sure if both email addresses need to be in gmail or only one of them.

I hope that people are able to 'friend' other people's friends, otherwise this connecting effort gets pretty hard... I know that if you 'heart' or comment a link, the friends of your friends will also see it. Hopefully at that point they can 'friend' each other. Not sure.

What I like about Potluck is that I'm able to Potluck a ton of links without being seen as a desperate attention seeker or a spammer, like in Facebook.

I wonder if that's an intentional design decision? Like, make it hard to have "Potluck friends" who aren't actually your friends? Of course, it does make Potluck's success entirely dependent on that of other social media platforms. Well, and Gmail. Hopefully these guys add support for other email services too!
