Towards an eco-friendly 3.1

Well I think it's pretty clear by now that there's an elephant in the room conjured by the newly released Vanilla 3.1 that nobody really wants to talk about. Uncomfortable though it may be, it needs to be addressed now rather than later, before further damage is done.

I'm referring, of course, to the fact that torches are now generated with a default charge equal to their maximum capacity.

We have all, doubtless, noticed that when a torch dims down to a 1-radius square of light, combining it with another torch fully refuels it, wasting thousands of turns of torch-wood, and emptying the forests surrounding Angband Town of their natural sylvan splendor and contributing the general diminution of species. This is an issue that affects us all, and I think we can agree that we should do what we can to hand over a healthy planetary environment intact to our children and our children's children.

Yeah, of course, elephants!
We all like elephants. That's why we need to protect our mountain forests!

Seriously. I rarely ever buy any torches, the starting amount is enough and keeps me going until lantern or death.

Though this is probably silly of me, given how little torches cost, when the torch I'm holding dims, I simply swap in a fresh one. Then, when the fresh one has burned down enough, I refuel it using the old one.

With just a few small steps, you can save money AND the forests. Everybody wins.

Hey, now that's an economic option.
Haven't even thought of that =D

No, not really. Half the time, you use two inventory slots just for torches...

Or just wait until it runs aiut and then refuel. The reduction in light radius should not seriously affect you if you are playing cautiously ie detecting and running away

Ah, but what if you are not playing carefully?

Perhaps going down with no wood-burning or oil-burning source is better (ie: blind until phial). At some point ones sense of smug, tree-hugging, self-rightoutness is bound to 'illuminate' the surroundings.

Send a message via ICQ to pav
