Other fun RogueLikes

After a hardcore couple of months Angbanding my ass off (concluding about a month ago after a my stupid fault Morgoth killed me) I decided to hunt around for a breath of fresh roguelike. Well I found some real winners! (even if you may consider these more like roguelikelikes or maybe psuedoroguelikes) I thought I would share them with all my Angband peeps

#1 FTL: Faster than Light

This game is fuckin sick. If you have ever wished to don the uniform of a Star Fleet captain, this game should satisfy that itch.
Basically: You pick a type of ship, pick a layout, and name your crewman, (Starting with very limited options, expanding greatly as you play) and then proceed to battle, haggle, and firefight your way across various star systems, with the ultimate goal being the defeat of Morgo-er I mean Boss Space Monster(don't wanna ruin it! also i haven't got that far yet)
VERY FUN and VERY VERY ORIGINAL

#2 The Binding of Isaac

This game here. Oh buddy. It took me a bit before I realized the depth to this game. Initially, it appears very generic and simple. So far from that is the truth. There are something like 250 different powerups to mix and match. Seeing as how you can carry something like 20 powerups, there would be something like 250!-230!. (Those are factorial symbols, but I digress)
The best way I can describe this one is a Legend of Zelda roguelike (NES Legend of Zelda)
This one is being remade for the PS4 and XBOX1 as well. So I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't blow up in popularity kinda like Spelunky did when it hit XBOX live. (Speaking of Spelunky, play that one too! it's fuckin awesome, and free on the PC)

#3 Rogue Legacy

This one is pretty damn fun. I've recently been hooked, investing about 4 hours a day. I can't help it. The other night, my girl was waiting for sex, I was like hang on, lemme save, the next thing that happened was I hear snoring and I realize that it had been over an hour since I spoke.. Yeah. It's like that
This one is more of a side view action platformer roguelike. You travel into an everchanging castle, fighting until you die, then choosing an heir (3 random children to choose from, each with random class and various random traits ranging from useful to counteruseful to just funny and/or dumb depending on your sense of humor) so you choose an heir, than that heir spends all his dead parents money to improve weapons and armor and magic and yada yada

I highly recommend any and every one looking for a new game to check all 3 of these out. They are my recent winners as far as games go. And I am far from easily impressed. I've been RPGing since Ultima/Wizardry/Dragon Warrior 1/Final Fantasy 1. So it takes quite a bit of originality to catch my attention, let alone impress me. These game impress me. In the order I have listed.

Actually.. The Binding of Isaac should be #1. FTL is sick, but it does seem to be starting to get repetitive. Keep in mind that I have played a good 12 hours over a few weeks, and I loved every second. But Isaac. That game is somethin else. I even started making a series of Let's Plays on YouTube. Which I've never done for any game. In fact my first YouTube video upload ever was about a week ago for that game

Hello! I was lurking around whilst downloading Angband (haven't played it yet) and happened upon this.

I have played FTL and Binding of Isaac, but not Rogue Legacy (yet!), and I agree they are excellent games!

Also of note is Dungeons of Dredmor, it is a roguelike with hilarious pop/video game culture references coupled with excellent gameplay.

Cheers!

Dungeons of Dredmor is definitely a roguelike. Binding of Isaac is arguably a roguelike crossed with a twin-stick shooter. FTL feels in some ways like a roguelike (largely in that it has permadeath and random levels), but I have trouble with that tag because it has many, many attributes that are non-roguelike. Also, it's a horribly capricious game; while I enjoyed it well enough I came to the conclusion that playing on "Normal" was bad for my mental health (as I'd get killed repeatedly through no fault of my own), while playing on Easy was too easy.

I haven't played Rogue Legacy, but there's nothing wrong with the appelation "roguelike platformer". That's what Spelunky is, after all.

Roguelike: the term "roguelike" has been used to describe games that possess one or more of the features of the Berlin Interpretation though not necessarily all of the features

Berlin Interpretation:

- Roguelike games randomly generate dungeon levels

- The identity of magical items varies across games.

- The combat system is turn-based instead of real-time

- Roguelikes traditionally implement permadeath.

So, yes, they are. According to Wikipedia, at least. Though 'roguelike-like' may be a better description.

I finished up the throne-room in Rogue Legacy for the first time yesterday. I gotta say, this game is a lot of fun. Fun is something I don't usually have. It has reminded me that I need to be reaching for 'fun' games more often.

I tend to only play immersive games that only rarely if ever evoke any kind of 'fun' feeling. I'm pretty sure I'm simply addicted to videogames, and long ago lost sight of the main objective... to enjoy myself.

I enjoyed Rogue Legacy. It brought back memories of my kid-self playing Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden, some of my favorite games of all time.

I guarantee that you were not having "fun" the 90th time that fucking bat knocked you into a pit in Ninja Gaiden, or the 120th time when that block disappeared beneath your feet only to plunge you into the lava in Mega Man 2

Haha, yeah. I beat Ninja Gaiden ONE TIME. And, that was enough for forever.

But, Megaman... I still load up Megaman 1-6. I prop the daughter in my lap and show off the pro leet platforming skills.
