Having asked the question about the easiest win and having received so much helpful advice from all of you (and being bored with the Half-Troll Cuisinart), I decided to take up the HE Ranger.
http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=7115 Rolled him up with somoe nice stats, but none extreme. I stocked up on 40 arrows, a few ?Phase Door and a Pick - I like having a Pick with me on the first few levels. Trip #1 ended on DL 3 for running out of ammo and meeting Smeagol - he's not a nice enemy to meet when out of ammo. I wielded the pick most of the time - it reminds me not to use melee when possible. Never say the RNG has no sense of humour: *The* character I decide to let mostly use Bow & Arrow finds a Defender dagger at 50'.... Imagine I would have sold that one and seeing the text 'The shopkeeper jumps for joy.' I briefly considered selling the dagger, but I think it's capabilities are too good even when not melee fighting a lot. What would you have done? Even without selling the Defender, I had enough money to buy the 2nd book, a bit of armour and a replacement ?Phase Door. Will keep you posted while going downwards.

That dagger is a superb find so early on. It grants RBase and Free Action, leaving your ring and amulet slots free for other things. It'll be a while until you find something better.

Dive #4.
Quote:
![]() ![]() Made four trips so far, am at 500' and level 16. I'm trying to go downwards faster, but there are many intersting (exp-granting) things on these levels, and I just can't resist the groups of hill orcs and cave orcs. Easy kill, much XP. Should I still try to dive deeper, especially now I have most neccesary resistances?

You're in good shape, try heading for stat potion depths (1700' onwards). But I notice your dump says you're carrying enough loot to slow you down. That's not too major if you're just waiting to recall, but don't try to fight while slowed. And I take it the ring of Resist Cold is just for selling? It won't give any additional benefit in V.
Oh, and if you do go to statgain depth don't mess with anything that causes blindness or confusion. Last edited by Dragonboneman; October 6, 2007 at 00:09. |

Alas... poor Weyland didn't make it. At level 25 and Dlev 23 he was doing away with some Air Hounds in preparation for a duel with Bolg, but the Air Hounds did away with him...

Fighting unresisted Hounds, for whatever reason, is a bad habit. Don't obsess over killing uniques whenever you see them - there's always next time.

Drago.
Here's another go at the HE Ranger.
http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=7121 This one got real lucky: He met Farmer Maggot right at the beginning, who carried a Quarter Staff of Slay Animal. That money gave me quite an Enchanted longbow. Another thing perhaps worthwile are the Gauntlets of Power. Is the bonus enough to offset the -10 MP? Love to hear from you, Cheers, Peter.

Good to see you've got off to another good start. Personally, I never wear gloves which impair spellcasting. STR-boosting items don't affect ranged combat anyway.

Update
Drago just met his first AMHD - the combination of armour and resistance of Scarabtarises neatly transform his (previous) instadeath Gas breath weapon in a mild case of halitosis :-)
I'm in doubt between my HA longsword and a dagger "Moteledh" which is average but has rConf (the only source). What would you do? Cheers, Peter. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=7121
