RandArts: total artifact count?

Does randarts increase the overall number of artifacts in the game? I would imagine so, if they are generated on the fly; in a standard artifacts game there is somewhere a list of all the artifacts that exist, but in a randarts game the number of artifacts is theoretically unlimited, right?

Having found a phial, might I find additional ones during the game? I'm guessing so, even though (I believe) Galadriel is the only phial that exists in the standard artifacts game.

I'm pretty sure you get the same number either way.

They are generated at birth, so it is a finite number just like standarts.

Though I would like to have a "it is lost, regenerate a new randart" gameplay myself. That way you can just keep farming for that insane gear forever and ever ... for some of us that is fun.

In fact it's precisely the same number, as they are randomised on a one for one basis.

Well, that's what git is for - if you build it, they will come ...

Well there are something like 128 artifacts. Even with the crazy current randart drop rates, I don't think I've seen more than 90. Either way, I've never completely exhausted the set, so from my perspective, they are infinite. The only place where they aren't possibly infinite is light sources, rings and amulets. Since you know exactly how many of each there are, there is a reasonable chance of finding all of them in any given game.

Once I'm finding only 40-50 a game, they'll seem much more infinite.

Except the less there are left, less chances an artifact is created (must fit base item type, yes?). Thus it is no wonder one can not really find them all, as after a while the chances of getting an artifact is really slim.

If a thrown away artifact gets the slot regenerated with a new artifact, then the overall artifact finding chance remains somewhat stable. And you could keep on farming, and farming, and farming away.

I think the OP was talking about infinite generation, not infinite drops.

You'll be pleased to know that the "crazy" drop rates are fixed in staging. I'm hoping they'll make it into tonight's nightly.

I know. But from the game player's perspective all that matters is how many artifacts the player sees. Whether there's 100 or 1000 or 100000 doesn't really matter if the player only sees 40.

Some variants do randarts as infinite artifacts, generally in addition to the standard artifact set. Zangband started that concept, IIRC, and ToME 2 continued it.

Sang has both fixedarts and randarts, but I don't know if the latter are infinite.
