[Pos/Cpb/Frog] Tips and Tricks for mid and late game?

What are tips and general advice for progressing into mid and then late game?

Typically I beat lonely mountain and then die to hubris. Should I go to the arena dungeon next and pick my battles? Are there other easy or must do dungeons or quests? Ironically enough my last character died to a entrance/guard monster on top of the arena.

I'm playing a burglary rogue at the moment. I'm curious to hear what peoples general goals and progression for getting into late game.

I feel guilty that I encouraged your character in http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=21637 to go to the Arena, after I posted it I had some misgivings as your characters hitpoints are maybe too low for Arena

I have not defeated the Serpent, but with strong melee classes I now regularly get to level 50

I am shocked that your character doesn't have a source of permanent poison resistance, I think getting fire/cold/acid/elec/poison resistance is one of the very first things that should be done
If you had nothing better then I think you should have worn "The Amulet of Seeking (+2) {cursed, -StSl;ElPo;Rf}"

Approaching the dungeon entrance you could have used detection, spotted the drolem, used potions of heroism, speed and resistance, and then attacked the drolem
Your characters last action was using a potion of resistance, you could have used a potion of healing

Your character has only 1 source of free action, I think that is very dangerous and that you need 2 sources

I think the way to go is to detect and play the percentages, going as deep as you can, avoiding non-profitable encounters
Bile wyrms give good xp and good drops, but if you only have 1 source of acid resistance and have only 1 staff of healing then I think it is pretty risky to melee it

I find it helpful to do as many quests as possible as kill as many uniques and dungeon guardian as possible, avoiding any that are too risky, so I ignore Utgard-Loke for a long time

Stealth makes quests much easier and also makes it easier to explore deep levels undetected

Damage, HP, AC, speed and resistances can be juggled to get different combinations that will work better in different situations, I don't know what the best way overall is, but I've found that if you have big damage you can make up for serious deficiencies elsewhere

What works for me is to go as deep as possible as fast as possible, constantly detecting, and choosing which battles to fight
My characters get to a much higher level now that I avoid extremely dangerous vaults and mega-summonings
In one sense I play more aggressively in that I go to deeper levels more quickly, in another sense I play more cautiously as I avoid a lot more battles, back in the day I would attack every monster I saw

If you want to go to a deep dungeon level and the dungeon entrance guardians are too dangerous then you have the option to keep going straight down in Angband by choosing to fail any Angband quests that are too dangerous

Pack enough mushrooms of cure poison and you can't die to the drolem at the Arena entrance. Mushrooms of cure poison are a really underrated item.

That character of yours who died to the drolem was easily strong enough to do Dragon Quest in Angwil (as long as he took enough mushrooms of cure poison with him to deal with the poison dragons). Dragon Quest is a really good quest to do in the midgame because it gives you both bags of experience and bags of loot. The lack of native double resistance could have been a minor problem, but potions and rogue stealth would have made up for that, or you could have made item swaps to get the resists covered.

Also, I'd say do Old Watchtower in Thalos for the wand of vampirism reward, that's a really useful midgame item.

The Arena dungeon is a relatively safe place to level up, but right after Lonely Mountain is perhaps a bit early to go there, at least for characters not as overpowered for the depth as your dead @ was. On the dead character, going there was reasonable (somewhat low HP like Mocht said, but silly speed and damage to make up for it). It was the dying where you went wrong, you should have avoided that.

Gertrude is a wimp in Compos (not so much in Frog), watch out for everybody else if you go after her though, because the open terrain of Witch Wood means you have to be constantly alert.

I wouldn't say wimp so much as 'appropriate for a character who hangs out on DL40', which in frog she is not. She could probably do with a higher damage output though.

Thanks for the sound advice, everyone. One major issue I had as player was that I totally let my guard down in that encounter partly due to me forgetting surface guardians where a thing. And in that moment I panicked to say the least.

I've gotten to very dangerous situations with the lack of curing by accident so mushrooms of cure confusion are lifesavers as well.
