memorable Maggot drops

Maggot just dropped a Helm of Beauty. Worthless, but memorable. I thought Charisma had been done away with. What is a Helm of Beauty still doing in Vanilla 3.5? I guess the Amulet of Adornment needed company.

That's odd; I just checked the edit files, and the Beauty ego has no allocation line, so it should be impossible to generate. I guess maybe there's some bug that means that even items with no allocation lines can potentially be generated in the town?

There's also a comment above it saying "Remove post-3.5" which suggests that it's only present for backwards compatibility with old savefiles or something similar.

I finally got tired of listening to the Maggot, and afterwards, pulled a pair of Leather Boots of Stability off his feet.
They've been splashed a few times, so they're down to [2,+2], but they started at +6. A bit lightweight, but I haven't found anything better, and the Nexus resistance has been... useful

Does he have a chance to spawn while you're already in the town? Or is it that he's either there when you enter or not at all? i.e. can I scum in town for him?

He can spawn while you are in town just like any other unique. Three special cases: Maggot is the only one that can spawn in town (and only in town) and Sauron can spawn only at 99 and Morgoth at 100. Everything else can spawn everywhere except town.

Game actually has 100 levels before M: 0, 1, 2, 3. Town is level zero.

So far as I'm aware, Maggot should be able to spawn in town if you just wait around long enough, i.e. if he's not there when you enter town he can still appear later. But if you want to scum for him, the fastest method would be to enter and leave dlvl1, since that causes far more spawns than you'd get simply by waiting. Of course, it only works if you don't have forced descent turned on.

Or connected stairs. With disconnected stairs finding upstairs can take quite long.

I just got the boots of speed from Farmer Maggot as well, in addition to finding a Longsword of Slay Evil and another set of excellent leather gloves at 50'.

After many frustrating occasions where all I got for my efforts was something like a pair of Leather Boots [2, +1], in my current game Maggot appeared straight after character generation and dropped a Whip (Holy Avenger) (+7,+5) [+1] <+2>. About as good a starting weapon as my Half-orc rogue could ask for.
