My own attempt below. I followed Skyknight's idea of making all titles gender-neutral, but I believe this version is even more strict; for example, I've used Cleric instead of Priest. I also avoided words not found in a dictionary.
Blackguard doesn't actually mean anything close to "evil paladin," so I prefer Marauder or Nemesis, but I suppose I'm in the minority there. + CLERIC + (instead of Priest) Acolyte Scribe Chaplain Cleric Healer Seer Diviner Oracle Prophet + DRUID + Naturalist Disciple Sage Ascetic Soothsayer Shaman Druid Hierophant Great Druid + MAGE + Apprentice Scholar Alchemist Illusionist Conjuror Thaumaturge Mage High Mage + MARAUDER + (instead of Blackguard) Hellion Brigand Raider Skirmisher Marauder Reaver Slayer Vanquisher Oppressor Nemesis Arch Nemesis + NECROMANCER + Initiate Augur Haruspex Ritualist Medium Occultist Warlock Necromancer + PALADIN + Warden Guardian Sentinel Protector Defender Knight Avenger Paladin Arbiter Justiciar High Paladin + RANGER + Scout Pathfinder Tracker Hunter Sharpshooter Ranger Elite Ranger Ranger Captain + ROGUE + Burglar Trickster Thief Rogue Treasure Hunter Expert Treasure Hunter Infiltrator Ringleader Guild Leader Mastermind + WARRIOR + Fighter Soldier Warrior Elite Warrior Swashbuckler Lieutenant Captain Marshal War Leader Champion High Champion Last edited by Djabanete; April 21, 2022 at 19:13. |

But the titles we have are in large part from AD&D 1e: https://dungeonsdragons.fandom.com/wiki/Level_title (I know. Lama in the titles of a very European-mold cleric class? Hmph.) |

I would also be on the side that says the less lines of non-important text present, the better. There's always a wealth of things that can be useful to show the player. A fluff title doesn't strike me as one of them, when it comes to the main screen.

I wouldn't care overly if we ditched the titles altogether.

Exactly this. I only occasionaly notice the title but I'm constantly aware of the number.
I don't see how adding titles adds anything to the gameplay or even the role-playing aspect of the game. The titles are so enigmatic that we can't even decide among ourselves what means what and why. This entire thread proves there will never be a natural order of titles, everybody has their own idea of what a hellion is and how powerful that ought to be etc. |

Yep, I only entertained the idea for the fun of it if someone wanted to change the game for themselves.
My vote is for numbers. |

I vote for removing titles. They are essentially meaningless to the game and imply a sort of hierarchy that an organization might have.
I also find it repulsive to care about the gender of words as if it is some sort of problem to fix. For example 'warrior' has always had masculine inclination simply because naturally women are inferior warriors. That is simply a fact of life and words that were meant to express meaning reflect those facts. Does this mean a woman can't be a warrior? No, but it does mean that female warrior has taken a masculine occupation. Removing the gender from words doesn't have an effect on the facts nor does it create equality. All it does is obscure and distort. There isn't some imaginary patriarchy keeping your imaginary female character from advancing in life just because her imaginary title has masculine connotation. That imaginary female character isn't more validated as a female just because she has a gender neutral title. Newspeak is cancerous thought control that doesn't benefit the average person one bit and instead benefits machiavellian politicians. |
