Chronos' Thread

This thread is about Combat Chronos, the Human Chaos-Warrior. He's already at depth 20, and going strong. This time around, there is a character dump available: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=6801.

Episode 1: Levels 0-12, 12-20
Chronos found out early on that low-level Chaos-Warriors have very little in common with Warriors, despite the confusing similarity in title. Chronos attempted the quest to kill Lagduf the Orc on level 6, but was soon overwhelmed by the orcs and forced to retreat. During the fight, his chaos patron Khaine presented him with an enchanted pike, and he managed to escape with it.

On level 11, Chronos came across the tome Nature's Gifts. Excellent!

On level 12, the quest was to kill Gorbag the Orc Captain. Chronos intended to flee the level immediately, but he saw an unidentified potion lying nearby and decided to snatch it. Unfortunately, a swarm of orcs came out of nowhere and rushed at him, blocking his access to the stairs from which he had just arrived; he hacked them to pieces one by one, but when he saw Gorbag coming for him, he read his only scroll of Phase Door, landing in a nearby room. He didn't know if Gorbag would be able to reach his current location, but he couldn't take the chance; if the Orc Captain were to find him, he'd be dead meat. So Chronos did the cowardly thing and read his scroll of Word of Recall, then ran away from the battlefield so that if Gorbag was in pursuit, he'd have some extra time. Moments later, he arrived in Town, looking to sell the Gifts and buy some useful stuff with the cash.

[AUTHOR'S NOTE: It's too bad I couldn't get to depth 20 all in one dive, but this was a case where the alternative was certain death. Since Gorbag moves faster than me, and since I was out of scrolls, there would have been no escape if he'd gotten his hands on me.]

Chronos killed Lion Heart and Farmer Maggot while in Town; Lion Heart dropped some useless armor and Maggot dropped Boots of Levitation. Chronos purchased a Ring of Resist Fire and some other handy items, along with a lot of Identify, Word of Recall, Phase Door, Teleportation, Cure Critical Wounds, Heroism, and Cure Serious Wounds. Healing potions and escape scrolls are critical for dungeoneers, don't ever get caught without them!

Back in the dungeon, Chronos was given a short sword of Venom by the ever-generous Khaine. He used the sword to kill the trickster Robin Hood, whose treasure included a Trident of Westernesse. Elated with this excellent find, Chronos decided to experiment with some of the unidentified wands he'd been hoarding, using a pack of Skaven as guinea pigs. Two of the wands were uninteresting, but the third -- very difficult to activate properly -- blew away half the pack in a single blast. It was a wand of Dragon's Frost. Chronos couldn't use it reliably, but he decided to hang on to it as a last-ditch defense should the need arise.

Chronos was getting 4 blows per round with his trident, and so he felt supremely confident when he went up against Ufthak and his marauding band of Orcs on dungeon level 14. He impaled them all, one by one; and this deed pleased Khaine so greatly that the god decreed,

"THOU NEEDST A NEW FORM, MORTAL!"

Ouch.

His stats had been jumbled, and the results were not strictly favorable. Sure, he had much better constitution now, so that his hit points were excellent; his charisma was a lot higher than before; but his mana reserves had been halved due to a loss of intelligence, and his dexterity had been reduced so greatly that he only got 2 blows per turn with his trident.

Despite the setback, Chronos continued to dive. On one level, just as he descended the stairs, he came face-to-face with a Trench Wurm. He tried to fight the beast, but it was no good; he went back up the stairs and rested up. He went down the stairs a second time, but this time he didn't bother to fight the Wurm, and instead just bypassed it with a scroll of Teleportation. Chronos landed amidst a fleet of Flying Skulls, who bit him and drained him of his strength. Ducking down a nearby staircase, Chronos ran into Hobbes the Tiger and a pack of wolves. Dodging past them with a scroll of Phase Door, Chronos found a downshaft and arrived on level 20, where he read a scroll of Word of Recall.

In town, he purchased a very fine Rusty Chain Mail of Dwarven make, which increased his strength by 3, but because of his low Dexterity, he still only could get 2 blows with the trident. He'd have to make do.

[AUTHOR'S NOTE: I've been going one by one through the classes, trying each class one or two or three times. Failed attempts include Rogues, Mages, Priests, Rangers, Paladins, and a Warrior-Mage. Perhaps I'll return to these some day, but the Chaos-Warrior is the only one I brought safely to level 20. First-stair diving isn't too bad with good fighter classes, but it's harder to pull off with mages and gimpy low-level semi-warriors.]

Welcome to the second episode of the incredible story of Chronos, now at depth 30!

Episode 2: 20-30

Earth Hounds give a lot of experience. Chronos found this out as soon as he recalled back into the dungeon. He gained a level almost immediately, which attracted Khaine's attention:

THOU NEEDST A NEW FORM, MORTAL!

Khaine turned Chronos into a Half-Troll. That's a lot better than getting turned into a Shadow-Fairy, or a Yeek. In fact, it made Chronos a much better fighter. Chronos was back to 4 blows; his hit points improved dramatically; and of course, he gained the ability to regenerate. He lost some intelligence and magic device skill, as well as some stealth.

On level 23, while Chronos was killing mindless hordes of evil and destruction (probably Orcs, perhaps something else), Khaine awarded him a beautiful Double Chain Mail of Resistance! He lost 3 points of strength in swapping out his Dwarven chain mail, but the resists were worth it. Chronos then found an amulet of intelligence +5, partially making up for the defects of being a Half-Troll.

The level 24 quest was Jaian, Boss of the Kids. Chronos turned 180 degrees and sought another way down. Back on level 23, Chronos had to hack his way through a legion of servants of Glaaki, ogrillons, and hill orcs, led by a lizard king, to find a downshaft. Upon arriving on level 25, our hero saw himself surrounded by dark elven warlocks; afraid to wake them up, Chronos teleported away. He returned and killed them off one by one from an advantageous position. One of them dropped a sealed chest... casting Trap/Door destruction to open the thing, Chronos was amazed to find the hard leather cap of Thranduil! Slapping it on immediately, Chronos dug around the loot for other artifacts, but found none.

On level 27, the magic cap payed off, by allowing Chronos to see the mighty Grendel before being detected himself. Chronos ran away very quickly. Down a level, the erstwhile human Chaos-Warrior ran into Sangahyando of Umbar. The two of them duelled for a while, and both were grievously injured when Chronos teleported away, landing right near a pole axe of animated attack, which summoned a potion mimic. Chronos teleported again, landing amidst a bunch of novice rangers; ignoring their sword strokes and magic missiles, Chronos drank about 6 or 7 potions of cure critical wounds in a row and teleported again, hoping to land somewhere near Sangahyando. In this he was partially successful, but actually the nearest monster was a Demonite. He fired a Bolt of Shocking at it, causing it to run away; and there were a few very tense seconds in which he tried to finish it off before it could summon, but couldn't seem to hit it. The Demonite regained its courage, and the wounded Sangahyando found Chronos; our hero killed them both in melee, winning the Stone of Lore for his efforts.

It was at this point that the pole axe of animated attack appeared on the scene, summoning Grendel and a full escort of bloodthirsty ogres. Chronos teleported, of course. Then our hero dived another two levels to depth 30, and recalled, since he had only one scroll of teleportation left.

While in Town, Chronos *identified* the two artifacts and the double chain mail of Resistance; Thranduil's random resist happened to be Chaos, while that of the chain mail was Poison. Excellent!

[AUTHOR'S NOTE: Sweet! Two artifacts between levels 20 and 30? I wonder what "perilous identify" means...]

Episode 3: Dungeon levels 30-37

Chronos didn't quite make it to depth 40 because he ran out of scrolls of teleportation. His dive from depth 30 to 37 was quite fast and involved a lot of teleporting and healing, and not a lot of fighting. He defeated his first young Dragons, which was fairly easy; a jade monk was much tougher; a cyclops proved unbeatable; and Chronos didn't even try to mess with Eol the Dark Elven smith. Meng Huo was killed quite easily. When Chronos recalled back into Town he was able to sell a quarterstaff of Force and a Dwarven splint mail for a total of $13K, but no items found in the dive were worth keeping (except a potion of enlightenment).

[AUTHOR'S NOTE: That's *plenty* of Entro for one day. Tomorrow I'll buy some stuff in Town and then go into the dungeon and try not to die.]

I lied again.
Episode 4: Dungeon levels 37-44

Upon recall Chronos dived several levels easily, emerging on level 42, where he sighted two mature dragons: a red and a black. Using the spell Fist of Force, he dug a short corridor in which he could fight one dragon at a time. Both were surprisingly easy to kill. Chronos gained a level and Khaine made himself noticed: Well done mortal, lead on! Chronos was granted another level. But as our hero was searching through the spoils, Judge Mortis appeared and summoned a Bone Dragon! Chronos teleported, and was kicked around by Jasra, Brand's Mistress (and her pet hydras) for a round or two before he teleported again. He scampered down a shaft leading to level 44, where he saw a sign: BEWARE, THIS LEVEL IS PROTECTED BY FAFNER THE DRAGON!

[AUTHOR'S NOTE: Colors are way too cool...]

The level was full of rubble. Chronos knew Fafner's position via telepathy, and could see the Dragon approaching; but he didn't realize that there was a line of sight between them, through all the rubble! Chronos was happily slaughtering Cold Hounds when Fafner's poison breath hit him for 270 damage: 75% of his total hit points. Chronos went right back up the stairs. He tried to dodge around Judge Mortis with a Phase Door, aiming for a different down-staircase; but instead of avoiding the zombie lord, he landed right next to it, and Mortis drained his experience, charisma, constitution, dexterity, intelligence, and wisdom in a single melee round. Ouch! Chronos teleported again and read a scroll of Word of Recall; 7 levels is a decent dive, and he could not contend with the Bone Dragon that was bearing down on him. He made it back to Town alive and breathed a sigh of relief.
