Cool [V] Dantares the Paladin

I assume this is where we blog - er, I mean - write about our adventures. One thing I'm hoping is, by sharing this, some more experienced players can point out my mistakes before I make them. I'd really like to get past dungeon level 15 for once.

Playing Angband 3.1.0 beta. My character is Dantares* the Dunadan Paladin. I'm starting with gold instead of equipment, so I have to do all my shopping first.

I deleted all the townspeople besides Farmer Maggot. They're annoying, give no reward, and make it hard for me to role-play a righteous knight.

However, since I deleted all townspeople besides Farmer Maggot, the hobbit is the first being I meet.

For a bit, I ignore Maggot, and buy myself a prayer book (got Detect Evil), a dagger (we like extra attacks over damage, right?), a short bow, a set of basic armour (why, oh why, do I start barefoot?!), all of the food and torches in the General Store, and one scroll of Phase Door. That uses up most of my money.

After shopping, I decide to "deal" with Maggot, right on the front steps of the General Store.

The only item to Maggot's name is a pair of iron shod boots. I swap my leather boots for those and sell the leather boots back to the Armoury. I'm able to take off my iron shod boots, so I know they're not cursed.

Having conquered the town, I descend into the depths of Angband. As I do so, I realize that I forgot to buy a cloak.

First level was pretty boring ("quiet, peaceful place"). Just snakes, lizards, and centipedes; with a couple of jackal packs, icky things, and molds thrown in. Everything died in about two hits (I guess I mean four hits, since I get two hits per turn). At some point I realize my boots are {excellent}. I'm also collecting potions and scrolls to sell in the town for identification. I also find a violet mushroom and a sling, and gain a few levels.

I go back to town and sell all my extra stuff. When I have a stack of scrolls or potions, I only sell one. I ended up squelching a stack of Summon Monster scrolls this way, and also ended up with a collection of Cure Light Wound potions and bottles of slime mold juice. I buy more scrolls of Phase Door, and got the cloak I missed last time. I also eat my violet mushroom, but nothing happens.

The town is pretty quiet. I guess the lack of blubbering idiots and singing, happy drunks takes away some flavour, but at least nothing is drooling on me anymore. With a sigh, I descend back into Angband.

This promises to be a truly epic tale. Three, count 'em, three screen shots and a character dump before even entering the dungeon.

Looking forward to the rest... and why has no one ever bothered to come up with a piece of code that would document our heroic tales for us, then allow to simply edit the finished product. Something like 'previous messages', only logged in it's entirety and much more verbose.

Nice story so far :-)

You might want to think about your starting stats for your next character attempt-- charisma is really a waste of points. I don't play them, so can't comment too specifically on paladins, but I bet if you tweaked your stats you could get 3 blows to start and hit 18 con which should help keep you alive longer. I'd also ease back on the food/torches to get some ?phase door to start with-- never know when a unique will start chewing on your leg.

So, righteous knights go around killing harmless hobbit farmers just because they're annoying and might have a nice item on them? I think your paladin's god may have words with him later.

Well...CON is the one stat I don't worry about on Paladins (much, I think 14 is a reasonable target but I've played lower-CON ones).

I usually go with STR-WIS-CHA or STR-WIS-DEX for stat priorities, depending on whether 18/10 DEX is possible.

Pete Mack will become famous soon enough
CON is always important, even if it's not important before 2000'. If you want to minimize stat gain, you are in trouble with starting CON 12 or whatever.

Depends. Some gods seem to approve of that sort of thing.

I prefer STR DEX CON on paladins (and got two winners ).
The spell failure rate is lousy for the starting time, but it doesn't matter, because the paladin is a tank nearly like a warrior.

I also perfer high CON generally because of the boring time in the stat gain zone if you are not lucky to find enough CON potions.

And the towns people are really annoying in 3.1, even with high stealth. ^^

Well, I was mostly looking to get high strength and wisdom at the time, along with some extra dexterity. I wasn't as worried about constitution as I probably should have been, and I'm not sure what role intelligence has for non-mages beyond magic devices. I didn't skimp on charisma since I didn't want to be ugly.

Say, are point-bought stats as good as rolled ones? Buying points are more straightforward than rolling a million times, but I don't want to put myself at a disadvantage if they tend to be lower.

Uh...I want to get all of the uniques.
I thought about renaming Maggot, but couldn't come up with something that wasn't stupid. I suppose I could just give him the evil tag.

Just wondering, what exactly would I do if I face the angel uniques?...

----------

50 feet makes me "feel a little lucky" this time.

Gained level 4 after killing a grey mold. I take more scrolls and potions back to town for money and identification. I buy my first shovel.

Went back down. Since the level is only "reasonably safe," I descend the next set of down stairs I see.

I am "unsure about this place" on dungeon level 2. I find my first amulet, which I'm pretty sure is either cursed or of slow digestion.

I meet Fang, Farmer Maggot's dog. I had hit him once before knowing what I was dealing with since he looked like a jackal (didn't Fang used to be white instead of brown?).

I immediately cast Blessing, then press my attack. When he's down to two stars of health, Fang runs away. I'm able to catch up to him in one move and attack. I trapped Fang in a room anyway, so he didn't have anywhere else to go. A giant black ant sleeps as I pursue Fang.

Fang turns to fight, so I shoot him with an arrow. In one turn Fang howls in pain, decides to run away again, then changes his mind and turns to fight. I do not stand for such indecisiveness, so I shoot another arrow, killing Fang. I gain Level 5. I am able to learn three more prayers, but only have the experience to learn two prayers from my book. Meanwhile, the giant black ant is sound asleep. I wake him up with my dagger, just because.

I cruise around the rest of the dungeon. After slaying some more miscellaneous vermin, who else should I meet but Grip!

I try to Bless myself, but I fail to concentrate hard enough. Grip took a step away from me for some reason, so I try again. I successfully Bless myself this time, and Grip has stepped towards me again. Grip did not run away like Fang did, and I slew him in a few more turns.

I realize that I didn't try out my new prayers yet. I Remove Fear from myself, though I don't have any, and I Call Light, though the room I am in already has light. Nonetheless, Calling that Light rose me to level 6.

I cruise around the dungeon some more, meet a few p's, and eventually get bored and climb an up-staircase. While looking for the staircase to the town, I find some dark green mushrooms and a tan mushroom. I eventually find an up staircase, but decide to stick around a bit longer since I'm only 3 xp's away from level 7. In the meantime, I notice that a soft leather armour I had picked up is magical.

I have been running around the dungeon to find that one last monster that will bring me to level 7. I notice that I am actually already level 7. I had killed a giant white mouse and didn't even notice the level up, probably because there were other giant white mice I had to deal with. I learn Detect Doors/Stairs and Detect Traps, which will make exploring much better. I'm still able to learn one more prayer but not any from my current book. Anyway, I'm close to the up stairs, so I go back to town.

It is night time now. Good thing the shops are open 24/7. I identify my brass amulet. It's an amulet of resist acid. Better than I was expecting, so I put it on. The magical soft leather armour also has a +1 AC bonus, so I put that on too. I decide to test out my mushrooms.

The dark green mushrooms turned out to be mushrooms of terror. And I had to eat them at night of all times! The tan mushroom turned out to be a mushroom of second sight. Well, at least I know to look out for them.

I pick up another Word of Recall and three more Phase Doors. I also find at the armoury that if I sell my +1 soft leather armour I can buy a +3 soft leather armour.

After finishing my shopping, I wait until my paranoia dissipates and then descend back into Angband.
